Spotting Burnout: 3 Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Burnout is a serious issue affecting countless professionals. Recognising its early signs is crucial for preventing it from spiralling out of control. Let's explore the key indicators and discover strategies to protect your well-being.

?

My Journey to Burnout

I once found myself feeling burnout without realising it. Exhaustion, detachment, and self-doubt consumed me. It wasn't until a concerned loved one intervened that I understood the severity of my situation.

Here are the 3 Warning Signs of Burnout I should have noticed:

?

1.?? Physical and Emotional Exhaustion

Constant fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and a general sense of overwhelm were the most common indicators. All I wanted to do was sleep during the day. But I could not get to sleep at night or woke up at 2 am with my mind on overdrive.

?

2.?? Detachment and Cynicism

Feeling disconnected from work, colleagues, and personal life should have been a warning signal. I wasn’t interested in socialising with my family or friends. All I wanted to do was stay in my flat and watch TV. I retreated into the comfort of my own company.

?

3.?? Reduced Performance and Self-Doubt

Simple tasks became insurmountable obstacles as I struggled to concentrate and make decisions. A creeping self-doubt eroded my confidence, replacing it with a fear of failure. These were significant warning signs.

?

Taking Action to Prevent Burnout

Recognising these signs is the first step toward recovery. It's essential to prioritise self-care, set boundaries, and seek support.

?

Remember to listen to your body and pay attention to physical and emotional cues.

?

Connecting with others is key. Share your feelings with trusted friends, family, or colleagues.

?

See your GP and discuss what professional help would suit you. You may consider therapy or counselling.

?

Prioritise self-care, making time for relaxation, hobbies, and physical activity.
