Spotlight On: Surf & Skate Communities in Taghazout

In our most recent summer shoot, we met some surf and skate creatives who are making their mark in Taghazout, Morocco. This location is one of those iykyk places that’s home to some of the best surf and skate communities in the world who all come here to meet like-minded people.

Against a backdrop of deep blue seas and golden sands, this unassuming fishing village has it all… you can surf around Devil’s Rock if you’re a beginner, or level up and try the famous Anchor Point for unreal waves. And if water isn't your thing, the concrete waves in Taghazout skatepark are full of crowds who bring the energy like no other. Located at the top of a hill with epic views, it’s got a magnetic atmosphere you won’t want to leave.

The friendships that have formed here are tight; Wafa Heboul (@wafaheboul ), a pro skateboarder who champions female inclusivity in skateboarding and co-founder of?@wheelsnfins ?tells us that they’re made up of individuals who share a passion for creativity and self-expression. Pro surfer and founder of?@dihyasurfmorocco ?Maryam El Gardoum (@maryamelgardoum ), says that having a community is all about having fun and meeting people from around the world.

We chatted to Wafa and Maryam to find out how they’re kicking off summer with their communities.

Tell us your story

At the age of 15 when nothing made sense, skateboarding helped me define who I am and shaped the woman I am today. Living in Taghazout, I’ve spent the last few years working on my skateboarding profile and advocating for female inclusivity in skateboarding across different international platforms. I quit my job 4 months ago and I’m enjoying being a freelancer every single day, challenging my creativity and skills whilst giving space for my mental health.

What community do you belong to?

My best friend and I started skateboarding together, and we created?@wheelsnfins ?as a skate and surf community to encourage girls to try skateboarding or surfing. We organise skate days with free lessons for everyone: newbies, beginners and intermediate skaters. Our goal is to create a safe space for girls especially, and for them to try skateboarding without judgement and fear of criticism.

What does it mean to be part of the skate community?

It’s about being part of a larger network of individuals who share a passion for a sport that values creativity, individuality, acceptance and self-expression. The community is made up of people from all walks of life, regardless of their differences, who are brought together by their love of the sport, the culture and the lifestyle that skateboarding represents. It unites all skaters, and if you’re a skater you automatically have friends all over the world.

One piece of advice on finding your community

It's important to know who we are. The more you engage with your interests, the more likely you are to find a community that feels like home – be true to yourself and your energy will attract your community. And don't be afraid to lead… if nothing is happening around you, take the lead and organise events or gatherings. Consider using social media and online forums to connect with people who share your interests.

What’s special about Taghazout skatepark?

It’s how the organisation gathered skaters from all over the world to build it. They worked day and night for a short period of time to introduce a sick skatepark for a new generation. This is community – skaters doing this for other skaters is pure love.

The best way to start summer is…

Organising a summer launch party for the community that celebrates all creators, environmental awareness, yoga and wellness activities with one killer electronic lineup.

3 places we should check out in Taghazout

The Skatepark:?Duuh, if you're a skater, you'll definitely want to check this place out. This recently-built park features a variety of obstacles and ramps that are suitable for skaters of all levels, but even for those who are not necessarily interested in skateboarding, the panoramic view of the sunset is just breathtaking.

Anchor Point:?This is one of the most popular spots in the town, and maybe what made Taghazout so famous. Epic surf conditions during winter will make you book a flight for the next swell. The beach is beautiful and offers excellent surf conditions for beginners and advanced surfers all year. The beach is also lined with cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or have a picnic with friends while enjoying the view.

Paradise Valley:?If you're looking for a break from the beach, consider taking a day trip here. This stunning oasis is located about an hour from Taghazout and is known for its natural pools, waterfalls and lush vegetation. The hike to Paradise Valley is not too difficult, and once you arrive, you can spend the day swimming, sunbathing and exploring.

Tell us your story

I come from a small fishing village called Tamraght, close to Taghazout. I started surfing when I was 11 years old, now I am a professional surfer and surf instructor. When I was young, I loved being in the ocean swimming and this motivated me to try surfing. In the beginning I didn’t really like it, but when I got some help from my cousin, I tried to surf on a longboard and loved it! I still remember that day when I first stood up on a board, even if it wasn’t the correct position. I really loved that feeling.

What community do you belong to?

I’m the founder of Dihya Surf School (@dihyasurfmorocco ). Named after Dihya, a legendary ‘Berber Queen’ who lived in the 7th century, the school represents strength, resilience and empowerment. It’s about fighting for what you believe in, staying true to your values, never giving up on your dreams, and empowering others through surfing.

What does it mean to be part of the surf community?

A lot of things. Firstly, having fun, but also it’s about meeting new friends from all over the world. Lots of people come to surf in the Taghazout area and we meet a lot of nice people who come to surf with us – I enjoy seeing them progress.
