In the Spotlight: Saheli De

As part of our Women in AI IN THE SPOTLIGHT series we had the pleasure to talk to Saheli De .

Saheli self-identifies as a math geek with a purpose. She works as a Senior Data Scientist in Blue Radix , an agri-tech company creating solutions towards AI driven autonomous growing. They believe in the fact that "AI can feed the world".

Unfortunately as a child she was diagnosed with a long term illness, a journey inspired her to give back to the world. She actively organizes data science meetups in Rotterdam to spread the knowledge of AI and build a community. She also has a NGO that brings education to poor girls in India.

Tell us about your work in relation to our award category AI Impact Maker.

Being the first employee of Blue Radix, I significantly contributed towards designing and building the first commercial autonomous greenhouse. Our product quickly reached 16 countries within 6 months of its launch. This product does not replace the growers, but becomes their best friend. The bigger goal is to solve the food crisis!

How does your work make an impact on AI and the world?

My work in my company serves 16 countries all across the globe. It makes me very proud to see the efforts finally come to fruition. Building solutions that augments humans rather than replacing them, builds trust on AI. Such should be the way to go! Also, educating young girls from deprived backgrounds is a very effective way to eradicate poverty and help a little kid "dream".

How does your work in AI make the world more sustainable?

My work is a beautiful combination of both "work that makes AI more sustainable" and "AI that makes the world more sustainable" The relationship of a grower and the AI that I developed (together with a brilliant team) is hyper-symbiotic, the AI learns from the grower's actions and vice-versa.

On the other hand, this product creates more yield and makes growing all over the world easier and with less ENERGY CONSUMPTION. Solving the food crisis with less energy!

What would you say to your younger self or other young women to encourage them to pursuit a career in AI?

Dream big because there is no one on behalf of you to do it!

What are the three core competencies (skills) that others should focus on, to be successful in your field?

  1. Machine Learning.
  2. Statistics/Mathematics.
  3. Story-telling.

Do you have any tips and tricks on how to develop more in-depth AI knowledge?

Get your hands dirty and connect with beautiful minds!
