MedStar Health (https://www.medstarhealth.org) has received a four year nearly $4 million grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (https://www.ahrq.gov) to establish the Patient Partnered Diagnostic Center of Excellence.
The Center is going to be established in collaboration with the Baylor College of Medicine, University of Toronto, Michael Garron Hospital, and Mothers Against Medical Errors. The grant is one of ten issued by AHRQ to address failures in the diagnostic process.
The grant funding will establish the Center of Excellence to bring together a team of seasoned researchers, clinicians, patients, patient safety advocacy groups, partners and patients.
The goal is to enable researchers to collaborate with patients to examine diagnostic safety and co-design meaningful solutions to prevent errors, improve communication between providers and patients, and support patient equity and engagement in their medical care.
The research team will also examine if additional challenges exist due to racial, structural, and institutional factors impacting historically marginalized patients. The research team will engage a diverse range of patients to ensure than any solutions resulting from this work is meaningful and can be equitably applied across care settings, patient groups, and the clinicians that serve them.
