Spotlight: new PaleoScore for ready-made meals in grocery

Following the success of the NutriScore on supermarket food packaging in Northwest Europe, the initiative is extending into popular contemporary diet metrics. The PaleoScore is being rolled out in the Benelux with UK and Germany to follow in Q2.

Project lead Niels Naaktgeboren (41) dials in from Rotterdam and explains, "The niche diet metrics are great, because they tend to have a loyal user base with fanatic gurus leading the debate and the scores don't change much over time. If anything, the more books, podcasts, Intas and Pinterests are published, the more locked in stone their criteria become. The Paleo Diet was an obvious one to start in ready meals, plenty of guys out there too lazy to cook but eager to impress."

He adds, "NutriScore is much harder to maintain relevant. General nutrition metrics are connected to whatever version of the Food Pyramid, Circle, Pentagram etcetera happens to be supported by national diet advisory bodies, who update their advice continuously. We have major overhauls on NutriScore metrics regularly, especially on the topics of fat, carbs, protein, hydration, pro-biotics, pre-biotics, vitamins, minerals and fibre. While these niche diet programs don't change at all."

The Paleo diet is the first being rolled out in the ready-made meals section, with Caveman, Low-Carb and Protein+ on the roster to be added within the next two years. NutriScore will continue its quarterly update as scheduled.
