Spotlight on Karen Peterman, Purchasing Manager, Empire Charlotte

In honour of Women's History Month, we are pleased to highlight the inspiring career journeys of Empire women. Today, we are excited to feature Karen Peterman, celebrating her remarkable achievements in navigating the dynamic field of Purchasing across different industries. Karen’s story inspires us all to embrace new challenges fearlessly and to never be afraid to ask questions.

Karen shares her career journey and what drove her to choose a career in Purchasing:

?“I started my career in Purchasing at a computer distribution company as a purchasing assistant. I was promoted to the position of Buyer and managed the acquisition and inventory for the printers and bar code products.? Upon moving to the Carolinas, I crossed over into the home building industry and took a position of Purchasing Assistant at Shea Homes.? From there, I was elevated to Purchasing Agent. I briefly worked as a Purchasing Manager for a custom home builder and was a Purchasing Agent for a few regional builders prior to the downturn. Post downturn I was very excited to resume my Purchasing career at Shea Homes, and eventually Empire Communities. I chose a career in purchasing as I enjoy negotiating, problem-solving, and strategic decision making.? I am presented with new challenges everyday, whether it is finding the best suppliers and trades, or navigating supply chain and labor issues, there is never a dull moment!”

Karen’s message for women pursuing careers in the homebuilding industry:

?“As a woman, you bring a unique perspective, skills, and creativity to the table. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and speak up.”

Karen defines the qualities she believes define a good leader:

“A good leader possesses integrity, is a good communicator, is accountable for his or her actions and particularly in the home building industry, is adaptable to changing circumstances.”

On what Karen finds most rewarding about working at Empire:

"I love knowing we are building homes for families where they will be raising their families and making long lasting memories."
