Spotlight on Johnson v. Grants Pass

Spotlight on Johnson v. Grants Pass

Here’s the scoop. On April 22, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case of Johnson versus the City of Grants Pass, Oregon. The court will decide if it is legal for communities to criminalize people for sleeping outside with a pillow, blanket, or piece of cardboard, as Gloria Johnson did — even when no shelter is available.?

Criminalization doesn’t solve homelessness — it only makes it harder to escape.

This is the most significant Supreme Court case dealing with homelessness in more than 40 years. The outcome will determine whether the United States will be a country that fines or arrests people for experiencing homelessness or a country that invests in solutions.

The good news is that there are alternatives to arresting people that communities can act on now.

If a storm hit your city and displaced 500 people in a single shocking event, how would the city respond? Every community knows what to do in these emergencies — they have a disaster plan. The same model works for solving homelessness.

?? Bright spot

Mr. Tucker used to avoid returning to the shelter, sitting in his car until dark. Now, every day, he looks forward to being home.

“From where I was to now, it’s like night and day,” he said. “It’s almost like this place here was meant for me to be in… because it’s just everything I need.”

Mr. Tucker is one the new residents at 211 Glendale, a facility that converted 60 transitional units into permanent housing for veterans exiting homelessness in Detroit.
