Spotlight on ISMers: Ricardo Ramirez Amaya

What date did you join ISM, and in what role?

I joined ISM on April 24, 2018 as a People and Culture Advisor. In this role I provided support, advice, and assistance to managers in complex or non-routine issues in the areas of labour relations, hiring, retention, performance management and development.

Please describe your current role with ISM. ?

On December 20, 2018, I was promoted to People and Culture Consultant. In addition to my previous responsibilities, I currently support multiple organizational projects from the people perspective.

What opportunities for growth have you experienced at ISM?

I moved to Canada as a graduate student in 2016. After completing my Masters’ studies, I got the opportunity to re-start my career in Canada at ISM. Although I brought important experience in labor relations from overseas, I found that legal systems and regulations were different in Canada. However, ISM supported me in my new role by providing specific training in labour and employment law in BC as well as additional training in areas such as Vertical Leadership, Change Management and Difficult Conversations. ISM also sponsored my application to the provincial nominee program as a pathway to becoming a permanent resident of Canada, for which I am immensely grateful. ?

What do you like (best) about working at ISM?

I appreciate the true interest that ISM has in the wellbeing and professional development of their employees by respecting diversity, promoting vertical leadership, and facilitating access to training and career opportunities.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love spending time in the outdoors with my family, which includes my partner, my daughter, and our little dogs, Milo and Sol. Our favorite outdoor activities include cycling, hiking, and kayaking.

I also love traveling and exploring unusual places, such us the Amazon rainforest where I had the opportunity to visit remote indigenous settlements and learn about their history and culture.
