Spotlight on: Internal Career Opportunities with Mac Miao

Jinsong Miao (Mac) has been with Winc for almost two years now. During this time, he has moved from Shared Services as a Banking Officer to Finance, where he is currently thriving as an Assistant Accountant.??

Here are some of Mac’s highlights from the last few years.?

“I have learned so much about Accounting since moving into this role at Winc. Different roles enable me to learn a new skill set, which I really like doing. Learning on the job has required me to push myself. But it’s been really rewarding when I realise I’ve expanded my knowledge base. I feel more valuable to the company and proud of my accomplishments. I also really enjoy working with different members of the team. The opportunity to learn from them, both professionally and personally is invaluable”.?????

You have to make mistakes to learn?

“Starting a new position definitely has its challenges. I’m not going to lie, the first few weeks are tough when everything is new: a way of thinking, the method of investigation and problem-solving skills required. The best way to tackle this is to make full use of every training and learning opportunity that is presented to you. I always take copious amounts of notes and ask lots of questions. I remind myself that there’s no such thing as a silly question because asking questions is how you learn.???

“And importantly practice makes perfect. We’re not expected to know 100% of the role from day one. Where’s the challenge in that? I love that we’re encouraged to try, and not be afraid to make mistakes. It’s about learning from the mistakes and progressing”.??

Identify the experiences important to your career goals and make them happen?

“Know what you really want and work with your People Manager to develop a clear career path. Seize every opportunity. If you find there is an ideal position available in company, do not hesitate. Talk to the related manager about the position and apply for it. Get out of your comfort zone and collaborate with different people.??

There are benefits to working In different functions??

“Working across different functions has given me the opportunity to learn more about the ‘real world’ accounting within a large company. It’s also allowed me the opportunity to understand the company structure and build relationships with different team members”.?

Make the most of your mentors and team members?

“My managers are my best mentors and all my team members give me so much support. The monthly catch-up with Jean Guo is helpful. We will look at my performance and decide where I’ve excelled where I can improve. She takes the time to really listen to my concerns and provide suggestions. Most importantly, she teaches me how to think strategically, and solve problems.??

I also really appreciate all my team members, both current and previous. They are really kind and friendly. If I struggle with a task, they are always there to help”.??

“I really love working with a bunch of people who feel more like family than work colleagues. Everyone is contributing their best, towards a common goal.??
