How long have you been in the building trade for?
I’ve been in the building trade for 18 years
What led you to become a building inspector, and what do you enjoy most about the job?
I was drawn to the role of a building inspector for the change of pace it offers compared to hands-on construction work. I enjoy the analytical side of the job, where I can use my knowledge to ensure that buildings are safe and sound. What I love most is helping people make informed decisions about their homes, whether they’re buying, selling, or just want peace of mind.
How do you build trust with clients during an inspection, especially when they might be anxious about potential issues?
Building trust with clients is all about communication. I make sure to explain things clearly and in a way that’s easy to understand. A light-hearted chat and a sense of humour often helps ease any tension, and I always try to be approachable and transparent.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career, and how has it shaped the way you conduct inspections today?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that you can never be too careful. Double-checking details is crucial because even small oversights can have significant consequences. This meticulous approach has shaped the way I conduct inspections today—thoroughness is key.
What does a typical day look like for you in your role? Are there any routine tasks or surprising elements you encounter regularly?
A typical day starts early. I’m usually out to the building site by 8 a.m., and then home by 2 p.m. for a quick change before heading out to an inspection around 3 p.m. One surprising element is seeing some of the creative, yet questionable, construction ideas people come up with—it never ceases to amaze me!
Are there any common misconceptions about building inspections or the role of a building inspector that you’d like to address?
A common misconception is that building inspectors are just failed builders. This couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re highly skilled professionals with the knowledge and experience to back it up. In fact, we’re still builders, just applying our expertise in a different way.
How do you balance the technical and interpersonal aspects of your job?
Balancing the technical and interpersonal aspects is all about understanding both the structure and the people involved. I make sure to stay up-to-date with technology, which is always evolving, while also focusing on clear and effective communication with clients.
How do you envision the future of building inspections evolving, and what excites you about it?
I’m excited about the potential of AI in building inspections. Imagine AI learning to identify defects through images and even assisting with report writing. It’s a fascinating development that could make the process even more efficient and accurate.
What skills or traits do you think are essential for someone in your role?
Being tech-savvy is increasingly important as our tools and methods evolve. Continuous learning is essential to keep up with new developments in the industry. Additionally, having a solid foundation in building practices is crucial.

I hope to raise the standard for DIYers by encouraging them to do things properly, adhering to best practices rather than cutting corners.
How do you handle stressful situations or unexpected issues that arise during inspections?
When stress hits, I take a moment to step back, have a drink, and listen to some music. It helps me stay calm and focused, allowing me to handle whatever comes my way.
What aspect of your job do you find most fulfilling?
The most fulfilling part of my job is knowing that I’m helping people make informed decisions about their homes. Whether it’s buying or selling, I take pride in providing detailed reports that can guide them in the right direction.

Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your career, and what did you learn from them?
My former boss, Marty, was a big influence. He had an old-school mentality from building in the 1970s, and he taught me that even if things aren’t perfect, you have to make them work. His advice has stuck with me: if you can’t make it look right, make it look like it’s meant to be.
How do you balance your professional life with your personal life?
Sleep! It’s all about finding the right balance, and for me, getting enough rest is crucial.
