A Spotlight on Black Excellence

This month and always, we're proud to honor the rich history and contributions of the Black community to Lennox and the HVACR industry. We're passionate about fostering belonging and providing employees with resources and opportunities to develop, grow, and thrive in and out of work.

Shemica Cole, Store Zone & Operations Manager, has spent nearly two decades with Lennox, beginning as a customer service agent. Throughout her career, she's held several diverse roles, from Store Manager to Aftermarket Parts and Supplies Supervisor, and now as the Zone Manager for the Lower Southeast. Shemica contributes to our success in many ways and manages crucial operations in her region.

Shemica graciously shared her insights as a Black professional for our spotlight on Black excellence.


How has your cultural background influenced your approach to work and collaboration?

"My cultural background has significantly influenced my approach to work and collaboration. Embracing the uniqueness of being the 'other person' in the room who looks like me, I bring a sense of confidence and grace to my interactions. This perspective allows me to navigate collaborations seamlessly with individuals of diverse genders and ethnicities. By appreciating and valuing my cultural identity, I foster an inclusive environment that encourages open dialogue and understanding, contributing to effective teamwork and positive work dynamics."


Are there specific challenges you've faced as a Black professional, and how have you overcome them?

"As a Black professional female in a sales position, I have encountered specific challenges that revolve around gaining respect from individuals who may not share my background. In my role, I consistently present my expertise and knowledge about our products to potential customers. This journey involves daily efforts to demonstrate my understanding of the products and my capability to communicate and convince customers to make a purchase effectively. Overcoming these challenges has required a combination of resilience, continuous self-education, and consistently delivering results. By focusing on excellence in my work and showcasing my proficiency, I have broken down barriers and built trust with customers and colleagues alike, fostering a positive and inclusive environment within the sales domain."


In what ways has Lennox supported your professional development and advancement?

"Lennox has played a crucial role in supporting my professional development and advancement. One significant avenue of support has been through mentorship opportunities provided by the company. Having mentors along the way has been invaluable, offering guidance and insights that have greatly contributed to my growth within the organization.

Moreover, Lennox has demonstrated a commitment to investing in its employees' education through the provision of tuition reimbursement. This support has allowed me to pursue and complete my education, equipping me with additional skills and knowledge that directly benefit my role within the company. The combination of mentorship and educational support from Lennox has been instrumental in my professional journey, fostering both personal and career development."


What initiatives or changes can further promote diversity and inclusion in our workplace?

"To further promote diversity and inclusion in our workplace, I recommend implementing initiatives focusing on education and awareness. Educating everyone on the importance of understanding each other's heritage is crucial. This can be achieved through workshops, training sessions, and cultural awareness programs that foster a deeper appreciation for diversity."


What advice do you have for aspiring professionals, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds?

"My advice for aspiring professionals, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, is to stay focused on your goals despite external distractions. It's easy to be influenced by what others are doing, but staying true to your path is key. In challenging times, perseverance is crucial. Plant the seeds of your efforts, stay committed, and trust that they will eventually bloom into success. Remember that your unique perspective and experiences contribute valuable diversity to the professional landscape, and staying true to yourself can lead to meaningful and fulfilling accomplishments in your career."


How do you celebrate and honor Black History Month?

"I celebrate and honor Black History not just in February but daily because my heritage is integral to who I am. While February is designated as Black History Month, I believe that every day provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the rich contributions of black and brown people. Countless stories, achievements, and individuals deserve acknowledgment, and I strive to carry this celebration throughout the year, recognizing the beauty and significance of Black history in its entirety."
