Spot Light: Why you should NOT choose Computer Science/Software Engineering as your career.
As time flies technology have become our most important part of life. No matter where we go or what we do, we are always surrounded with tech gadgets and devices. No matter which organization you work or which industry you belongs to, it must requires a tech unit in organization to work on and to continue growing.
As fast as the Technology became so advance and important in our life, Techies became more demanding and are required in huge number in industry in each and every field of work. This requirement is increasing day by day. Just in USA Industry trends indicate that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million computing jobs available. On the surface this sounds great, but there’s a problem. According to Code.org, colleges will only graduate 400,000 computer science student by 2020. That translates to 2.4 percent of students graduating with a degree in computer science.
That’s the reason students getting in Computer Science or Software Engineering in rush and blindly looking at stats and how its booming throughout the globe in terms of fame, job opportunity and money. As well as the number of techies are required but also the Passion, Creativity and Innovation is demand of industry in each individual which is getting lost day by day.
If you ask such candidates willing to get in Computer Science/Software Engineering why they are choosing this as their career they might reply you like they have interest in computing or they love computers, something like that. Being a Software Engineering student as well as the working professional in tech industry I frequently encountered in such situations where I get such reply by newbies.
Here is what you should understand before you choose computer science as your career.
Things like Facebook, a text editor, a Video editing tool, a 3D game, an interactive mobile app or even your web browser seems pretty cool and interesting and might make you think how cool is this industry is but things which seems pretty awesome to you by its looks might be a night mare for its developer at back-end and have taken months or years to develop. Being good in using these apps/software or devices and browsing internet doesn’t really mean you can be a good Computer scientist or a good software developer. That’s the thing I see students realizing in their final semesters of graduations. It is highly recommended to figure out first what you really want to do and what you are capable of doing.
Let us take a quick example to understand the logic. What if I ask how many of you have interest in having pizza or Biryani? Almost everyone will come up with YES I am. But what If I ask how many of you have interest in cooking Biryani and Baking Pizza? So now, the numbers will be reduced with huge ratio. Even if you have interest in cooking pizza, are you capable enough to learn how to cook?
If you are choosing you career now or guiding someone to chose, do it wisely.
