Spot the difference: From chaos to pristine order

Spot the difference: From chaos to pristine order

Do you ever find yourself engrossed in those "spot the difference" images on social media? I do.

A few years ago, I was conducting a training session for my company. I pulled up three images of toolboxes and asked the team to describe what they saw.

The first image portrayed an unorganized mess, quite like my own toolbox in the garage at the time.

The second was an image of a meticulously organized toolbox with each tool neatly resting in its drawer.

The third and final image showcased a unique toolbox: it featured foam cutouts with designated spots for each tool. Its vibrant blue background highlighted the outline of any missing tool.

That was an epiphany for me.

Most of us crave organization. We tirelessly strive to keep our surroundings in order. Many of us succeed in this endeavor, making our work more efficient and productive.

With everything neatly arranged, we avoid wasting time hunting down our 1-inch hole saw or #10 socket (yes, those are real stories and one even included an unnecessary trip to HomeDepot). Instead, we focus on the task at hand.

Without such organization, reaching desired levels of success becomes a challenge.

But, it's also possible to appear organized even when you're missing essential tools.

My revelation came with the image of the truly organized toolbox. Each tool had its spot. At a single glance, one could assess if anything was missing. If a tool wasn't there, its absence was instantly apparent thanks to the bright blue background and the specific tool outline. I was smitten...

What if we could apply the same principle to our lives?! What if we had systems in place ensuring the right tasks were done, and if they weren't, it was glaringly obvious?

That's what I proposed to my staff that day. I challenged them to systematize their responsibilities and to implement methods to quickly identify if tasks were falling through the cracks. It was essentially about accountability.

When I later sold my share of the business, I immediately started devising a similar system to serve my financial services clients.

Most individuals—even those in very high net worth families with $50mm +—don't have everything in perfect order. They lack a figurative highlighted toolbox that points out what's missing.

Moreover, they often don't know what to look for.

So, we created a solution for them. We offer our ideal clients 10 deliverables accompanied by a 177-point checklist. If anything is missing, it gets highlighted swiftly.

I believe this approach instills peace of mind in my clients, removing any stress about their finances. They KNOW that everything is in perfect order, and our system ensures it stays that way.

So, I invite you to ponder, "On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), how confident are you that your entire financial life is in perfect order?" Be honest.

You CAN achieve that level of order, but it will take some work. I assure you the effort will be worth it.
