With innovation comes opportunity.
Internet Radio is a rapidly growing medium and has done all sorts of interesting things, but Perth based Radio Edge have opened the door for an enormous opportunity for any sport, at any level to be covered.
Having developed an operating platform to allow for the efficient programming of many streaming stations simultaneously, Radio Edge successfully launched 'Footy Radio' in March to broadcast and support the WAFL competition.
This has quickly evolved into a 24/7 footy station with replays of all WAFL games, interviews, footy news, club stories and information on pretty much anything to do with football in WA.
Broadcasting on their website - www.footyradio.com.au and through the WAFL app (which has over 30k downloads), Footy Radio is now reaching listeners in the thousands each week and recently had listeners from 11 different countries tuned in to the Anzac weekend clash between West Perth and Swan Districts.
The model is now being looked at by dozens of sports and even individual clubs that want to gain exposure and also provide value to sponsors that traditionally have had very little in the way of coverage external to the game on the weekend.
The platform development has significantly reduced operating costs making it extremely affordable to suburban, country, amateur and lower grade clubs and competitions.
Given each 'station' has its own stream, it means there are literally no limits as to how many games can be covered simultaneously - something that physically can't be done by a traditional radio station.
This can be expanded to a more 24/7 format for your competition, sport or club as a library of interviews, game calls and programming is developed, combined with a programmed music mix.
This is professionally managed and programmed by Radio Edge, who first ventured into Internet Radio way back in 2000! Your station will engage with fans on a level totally unheard of previously and much more effectively than a 15 minute segment on a local community station.
Given cutbacks and limitations of mainstream media, this is without doubt the way of the future to provide exposure to the many sports and therefore clubs, that have been ignored by traditional media.
You may not rate as well as an AFL Grand Final, but you will be able to reach you friends, families, supporters and the public interested in your game as well as add value and increase the level of sponsorship your club or sport currently obtains.
