Honoring Kobe & Gigi Bryant
Over the last few years, retired NBA superstar Kobe Bryant has sat down with CNBC to discuss the sports industry, investing strategies and more. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna died Sunday morning in a fatal California helicopter crash that killed seven others. There were no survivors in the crash around 10 a.m. in Calabasas, Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. (CNBC)
All I ever needed to know about Kobe Bryant was this: that throughout our friendship, the most meaningful conversations we had — they were always about family. Put aside one of the all-time great basketball careers for a second. Put aside his famous work ethic, the Mamba mentality, that incredible will to win. SPORTS MONEY
Barstool Sports, the controversial sports and pop-culture blog, agreed to sell a 36% stake to casino operator Penn National Gaming Inc. for about $163 million, the latest sign of convergence in sports, media, and gambling. Penn National will increase its ownership to about 50% after three years with a further investment of about $62 million, the companies said Wednesday. (Bloomberg)
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will make the biggest start of his career this Sunday in the Super Bowl. He took the NFL by storm as a first-year starter in 2018 after essentially being redshirted while a rookie in 2017, posting one of the most prolific seasons in NFL history for a passer. (CBS)
ATHLETE NEWS
With the All-Star Game only weeks away, the NBA has decided to use the event to honor Bryant after his death Sunday in a tragic helicopter accident. In a press release issued Thursday, the league announced that the game's format has been changed, with Bryant at the center of the alterations. (CBS Sports)
Brady tweeted a cryptic picture Thursday evening, one that appears (also on Instagram) to depict him in shadow walking alone from a tunnel into (or out of) an empty Gillette Stadium. What does it mean? Tough to say given Brady's tweet was devoid of words. Reporters and fans are sure to parse it for days and maybe weeks as the 20-year veteran, barring an unexpected extension, prepares to enter free agency for the first time. (USA Today)
