BUSINESS IS BOOMIN'
Hyperice, a maker of performance recovery products, is valued at $700 million after raising $48 million from the National Basketball Association, the NFL’s investment arm 32 Equity and a group of professional athletes.Hyperice, which uses vibration, percussion, compression and thermal technology to aid in recovery, is set to exceed $200 million in revenue in calendar 2020. That’s about 20 times more than its $10 million in sales in 2017. (BNN Bloomberg)
Three former high-ranking Walt Disney Co. executives are teaming up with basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal and one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s sons to make acquisitions in the media and technology industries. The group created a SPAC—an increasingly popular way to raise money and list a company publicly without having to file for an initial public offering. Through September, SPACs have raised more than $40 billion, compared with $13.5 billion all of last year, according to Dealogic. (The Wall Street Journal)
NEW BEGINNINGS
New Orleans Saints star safety Malcolm Jenkins launched Broad Street Ventures, a $10 million investment vehicle funded entirely by Black and Brown investors including a small group of fellow NFL players. Broad Street Ventures has already invested in Airbnb, Epic Games, Turo, NoBull, Automattic and ZenWtr. The strategy is to invest in companies backed by the top 20 VCs. (Forbes)
The Baltimore Ravens is launching a new podcast series called “Black in the NFL” that will take a look at how race intersects with the league and its fans. Hosted by team staff writer Clifton Brown, the 10-part series will explore what it means to be Black in the league today. episodes will dive into both national topics, such as voter suppression and policing and NFL related topics like the experience of Black quarterbacks in the league. COVID-19 & SPORTS
The NFL rescheduled three games because of issues related to the novel coronavirus and the recent positive tests involving the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. The schedule maneuvers are contingent on no further coronavirus-related complications for the Patriots and Titans. The Titans have had 21 members of the organization — including 12 players — test positive since last week. The first outbreak on an NFL team is not abating, and the league was forced to deal with its most complicated scheduling crisis yet. (The Washington Post)
Less than a week after the MBL announced that up to 11,500 fans will be permitted to attend 2020 National League Championship tickets for the Fall Classic quickly sold out. On Tuesday afternoon all official World Series tickets sold out in approximately 90 minutes. MLB sold seats in "pods" of four and declared that individual seats within pods cannot be broken up and sold separately. Additionally, spectators must wear masks inside the ballpark when not actively eating or drinking and respect social distancing guidelines. (Yard Barker)
