Sports Betting: A Decade After Adam Silver's NYT Article, Where Do We Stand?

I have never been embedded in sports betting in project directly, hence I consider myself a curious ignorant on the matter, so very often I try to deep dive to educate myself and have more dots to connect.
This is one of those time; in few days it will be 10 years since the pivotal article op-ed that appeared on 纽约时报 on Nov. 13, 2014 by Adam Silver (NBA Commissioner), which is considered by most the starting point of the legal sports betting shift in the USA.
This article has two parts: first I look at the last 10 years with a light touch perspective and then - prompted by my latest work with Ably the Realtime Fan Engagement platform - I dive deep into the tech need of that sector for modern betting fan experiences.
As we say in Italian "L'appetito vien mangiando" - You will need to translate that by yourselves - I got caught into the subject and also two appendixes: first a bit more about Adam Silver then a quick review of the sports betting ecosystem for the less experts.
Part 1: Sports Betting, Where Do We Stand
In 2014, Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA, penned a groundbreaking op-ed in The New York Times advocating for the legalization and regulation of sports betting in the United States. At the time, his stance was revolutionary, challenging long-held positions by major sports leagues against gambling. Nearly a decade later, it's worth reflecting on how far we've come and what challenges remain in integrating sports betting into the fabric of American sports culture.
A Shift in Perspective
When Silver wrote his piece, sports betting was largely confined to Nevada, with the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992 prohibiting states from authorizing sports wagering. Despite these restrictions, an estimated $400 billion was being wagered illegally on sports each year. As someone deeply involved in sports technology and strategy, I've observed firsthand how this legalization has spurred innovation. The integration of sports betting into digital ecosystems has enhanced fan engagement, creating new avenues for interaction and entertainment.

Appendix 1: A Bit More About Adam Silver
Adam Silver is an American lawyer and sports executive who has served as the Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) since February 1, 2014. Born on April 25, 1962, in Rye, New York, Silver developed an early interest in both sports and governance. He graduated from Rye High School in 1980 and went on to attend Duke University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1984. His academic journey continued at the University of Chicago Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1988.
Following law school, Silver began his professional career as a law clerk for Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
