SPORT & FITNESS

HOW OUR PUPILS STAY ACTIVE ALL YEAR ROUND

There is nothing quite like the feeling of crossing the finish line in record time, scoring your first goal, or winning the last match of the season with your teammates. Sport and fitness means a great deal to many of us as it not only provides physical benefits for our health but also benefits our emotional and mental wellbeing too.

As a school that is based in the heart of Wales’ capital city, Cardiff, sport and fitness is one of our core values, along with wellbeing and sustainability. Therefore, ensuring our pupils have access to world-class sporting facilities and a wide variety of sport and fitness options is very important to us; for every Alun Jones there is a Fred Astaire, so we cater to all interests and passions here at Kings Monkton School. 1. The Importance of Sport and Fitness

Sport and fitness?is?more than it used to be a few years ago; if the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is that exercise is a fantastic way to boost wellbeing and is a great opportunity to socialise with others. Sport and fitness?has?always been an important element of our curriculum, but now more than ever, as we focus our attention on our core values of wellbeing along with sport and fitness, we are well and truly seeing the amazing benefits it can have on children. Here are the benefits of making sport and fitness a priority in the curriculum:

1. Physical Health

Probably the most obvious, yet one of the most important benefits of carrying out sport and fitness classes at school is the impact it can have on your physical health. Making sure to get that all important 60 minutes of exercise a day can help to?reduce the chances of becoming very ill from health risks by up to 30%?which is a great reason to get up and move about!

Another important benefit is that exercise aids in strengthening your bones and muscles which can help to prevent joint and muscle pain as you age. Exercise also helps you to sleep better and hence boost your energy levels which is great for your body and mind.

2. Mental Health

On the topic of the body and mind, physical activity is a fantastic opportunity to better your wellbeing and mental health. As previously mentioned, 60 minutes of exercise can boost your energy levels which will in turn help to boost your mood and morale, ensuring you have a great start to the day. Sport and fitness is also a good way to?release the tension and stress?you may be feeling as it takes your mind away from what might be troubling you and keeps you in the moment.

It is also an opportunity to set yourself goals and motivate you to achieve great things, and this can also be driven by a sense of comradery that comes hand-in-hand with sport and fitness.

3. Relationships

Even when not playing a team sport, there will always be others in your class, or someone cheering you on from the sidelines to drive you forward and push you to achieve your goals. Sport and fitness has always been loved for its natural ability to bring others together and build strong, long-lasting friendships. Sport and fitness is more than just an excuse to keep fit, it is a way to meet new people, socialise, and make meaningful connections, which in turn also benefits your wellbeing.

2. Our Sport Facility Partnerships

As you can see, physical activity has a plethora of benefits that solidifies it as an essential part of our school’s core values. Therefore, to ensure that our pupils have many different sport and fitness options to suit their skills and passions, we partner with some of South Wales’ top sports facilities. We make these amazing partnerships so our pupils can visit facilities that the general public may not have access to on a regular basis. These facilities also often utilise state of the art technology, equipment and spaces so pupils can truly be the best they can be.

We are very grateful that we get to partner with organisations such as:

3. Activities and Clubs Pupils Can Join
