No surprises that Halloween is a prime time seasonal opportunity for Augmented Reality, easily transforming yourself digitally into any creepy character. That’s why we’re seeing more and more innovation surface in this space each year, we’re looking at some of the best spooky visual tricks and treats of 2023.?
First up Snap made big moves with its Phantom House, a multi part video series which integrates AR and their AI Dreams features to further bring the experience to life throughout the series. TikTok is also looking and sounding a lot spookier this year as they ramp up one of their Creator challenges with a Halloween theme, Creators can submit their Effects for a chance to win up to $2,500. They’ve even added a few new spooky templates to make it even more accessible to get involved.?

8th Wall have also been experimenting with some of their new features and giving them the Halloween treatment, our favourite is the use of GenAI models to bring an AR campfire in front of you, then a generative prompt will take the users input, adding visuals to the sky and a voiceover deliver the a spooky story - all in the real world comfort of not a dark damp scary woods by the fire.?
Mixing spooky realities META and the Quest 3 are taking over the streets in Shoreditch with their ‘Thrillboards’. Two inconspicuous billboards appear to showcase well-loved Halloween titles but on closer inspection, invite passersby to enter the worlds of Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners once inside you can experience and demo both tiltles on Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headsets. In the build up to mixed reality event which is open for three days, a teaser invitation video saw marshmallow oozing from the location.
