How To Catch A Ghost

Check The Timings

How long a job has been live can be a tell-tell sign that the role may be a ghost. According to research, it takes approximately 44 days for companies to fill an open position.

So, if the job you want to apply for has been open for two months or more, it may be a good chance that it's a ghost job. But there is a way to double-check....

Inspect Their LinkedIn Profile

With LinkedIn being the number one social media site used for hiring, if a company is looking to hire, they're more than likely to post it to their company page. This will confirm whether a job posting is authentic. From their Linkedin, you'll also be able to see if you have any connections who work at the company that you could reach out to about the role.

Pay Attention To The Details

If the job description you're reading sounds vague or generic, then it's a good indication that it may be a ghost posting. Ghost postings normally lack details about the specifics of the role and its responsibilities, and instead, heavily focus on the perks and benefits of a company to entice candidates to apply.

How to you navigate the rise of Ghost Jobs as a job seeker

Network, Network, Network

Applicants who are reluctant to network miss out massively on the advantages it brings during the job hunting process. Networking not only allows you to build connections with the right people in the right organisations, but also discover legitimate hiring opportunities from those directly involved in the process.

Reflect and Move On

If you have fallen into the trap of applying for a ghost job, it's best to reflect on the application process and focus on new opportunities. Review your applications, make sure your LinkedIn profile highlights your key strengths and achievements and professionally outreach.
