Spook Spann and the New Zealand Red Buck
Spook Nation, where the thrill of the hunt is ceaseless and ubiquitous.
This time, Spook Spann heads out to the vast plains of New Zealand once again, but on an entirely different occasion. As he is widely known around the globe for his hunting skills, one of his female colleagues from NZ sent out an invitation for red buck hunting. Red bucks are an exclusive breed and truly gorgeous animals, which always makes a perfect target for Spann’s predating eyes.
An Uneventful Prowl
Spook takes his regular scouting stroll, accompanied by the young female hunter. They make their way throughout the wild grass of a very wide area. Even though the visibility is optimal, the deer remain hidden within the tiny valleys of the region. Spann decided to use his compound bow for this particular hunt, so as not to scare any roaming and potentially gorgeous bucks.
The female spots a prime catch with her binoculars and sends Spook off to do the job. The area is very quiet and the bucks are extremely cautious, so Spook almost crawls his way to a vantage point. There’s an enormous buck with beautiful horns prancing about right in front, and as Spook finally readies the shot. It turns out to be a slow reaction and the alerted buck quickly wanders off.
The Morning Stalk
Spook and his female associate decide to opt for the rifles this time. They start off early in the morning, after carefully surveying the area for the big red buck. There’s also a tracking hound accompanying them for ease of orientation. Jason Dotson, the producer of Spook Nation, is also part of the pack. They make their way into the little forest preceding the spot where they will remain hidden.
As Spook was having second thoughts about closing in on the buck, due to their unfavourable position, JD decided he would take the shot. They begin crawling silently through the grass, toward the buck’s unsuspecting backside.
A Twist of Fate
JD places the sniper onto its stationary part and starts aiming at the buck, but the video cuts out soon after. We then see JD explaining how he dropped the extra battery packs back when he switched with Spook, and how they had no choice but to delay the shot. The buck unexpectedly strutted around the mountainside for about 30 yards. Almost, in a celebratory and bragging way, before it pranced off into the unknown.
This marked the end of the day for the crew and the video proceeds into day 7 of the hunt. If you’d like to witness the marvellous hunting prowess of Spann’s crew that eventually led to the buck’s prized horns, watch the rest of the video at the link below.
