SPONGE CITY
The irrationality of a thing is not an argument against it’s existence, rather, a condition of it.
—Nietzsche
As the big cities flooding often occurred due to raining in recent years, Sponge City construction would gradually become more and more important . Sponge City is also to be named “Construction of Rain Water System for Low Impact Development", its aim is to protect the city from excessive rainfall.
Along with the rapid growth of urban population and the shortage of land resources, the high-density land development has become an inevitable choice for large and medium-sized cities in China . The residence with high plot ratio not only appeared a large building size, but also formed a high building density.
In these high density building districts, some of factors all together make rainwater infiltration to be blocked, for example large area hardening pavement, low greening rate, large underground space, buildings zero distance to red line.
A large of infrastructure modification would not only cause a great destruction to these existing big cities, but undoubtedly be very difficult to achieve. Have to saying, the selection and layout of sponge measures are so much to be restricted, that directly make the construction of sponge city in high-density development area become a luxury dream.
Highly positive mindset

5 年Perhaps some of these problems could be resolved or better managed by retrofitting the roofs and sides of buildings to recycle the rainwater or find some other use to which it can be put. It seems to me that construction has to become more responsive to the climate crisis and the need to move toward more green technologies. We can save the environment, avoid damages, and save money in the long run.

5 年Hi Max , Having lived in Cairns for numerous years and having a back ground in housing / unit construction, albeit , usually office bound , I smiled at your reference to " sponge city " as a high percentage of Cairns is built on mud and sand . I remember a development in the inner City and they made mention of 2 levels of car parking below ground and I was quite surprised as numerous buildings in the City with below ground parking / bars / night clubs had serious problems with sealing out the subterranean water and at least 2 that I am aware of , gave up and closed . Even lift wells have water pumps operating up to 24 hours a day . So I wasn't surprised when the development with the 2 levels of underground parking changed their design .
