[Spoiler Alert] Squid Game: 3 Lessons for Your Career Advancement (from the most popular streaming show ever)

[Spoiler Alert] Squid Game: 3 Lessons for Your Career Advancement (from the most popular streaming show ever)?

Warning: Spoiler Alert - if you have not seen but intend to, or are in the middle of Squid Game, do not read on if you don’t want spoilers.?

Lesson 1 - Know How to Win the Game Before You Take Action

Game: Red Light, Green Light?

There is a method, and if you do what everyone else is doing before you know the rules, you’ll get shot down. In the game on the show that mimics the children’s game of the same name, if the contestant moved at all during the red light they were shot. Think of the creepy oversized doll that shoots people as the Applicant tracking System (ATS). They are looking for a reason to eliminate you to weed out the best applicants. Don’t give them one.?

Many contestants in the show got shot down because they didn’t realize the rules of the game.?

If you’re just submitting resumes online, and have not had it reviewed by a trusted professional, have not tailored it to the job listing, and have not formatted it correctly, you will probably get shot down. And that means you won’t even make it to a human reviewer who could see your value. If you don’t know the rules of the game you’ll just keep wasting your time and keep getting shot down.??

Lesson 2 - Use Your Tongue to Make the Game Easier to Win?

Game: Honeycomb/Ppopgi

?In the Honeycomb game, contestants had to etch out a design from a brittle honeycomb cookie. If they broke or cracked the cookie, they were eliminated.?

The main character, Seong Gi-Hun, starts to etch the design with a needle like everyone else. He realizes that he can soften the etching he made by using his tongue and licking the cookie. This makes it less brittle and easier to create the desired design.?

Now I don’t want you to lick prospective bosses or colleagues, but this is a metaphor for using your tongue, as in speaking or networking, to create relationships. These relationships are like the saliva that smooths out the process to pave the way to the result you want.?

You see how feverishly Seong Gi-Hun licks, and I invite you to adopt that same urgency with your networking.?Otherwise the odds of your desired outcome are likely too brittle with just an application. And this is a long game by the way, not just reaching out to a hiring manager when you apply.?

Lesson 3 - Learn From the Mistakes of Others

Game: Glass Stepping Stones

In this game contestants must hop across a high bridge composed of glass tiles. Some tiles are glass, and thus the contestants drop through when the glass breaks, while others are made from tempered glass allowing the contestants to continue forward.?

Each piece of glass breaking represents someone before you making a mistake. This could be a typo on your resume, not having a compelling elevator pitch, or not having stories prepared for your interview. Each one of these is avoidable because you have knowledge of those that went before you.?

But are you going to continue to jump on glass and fall through??

In summary, I hope you win your employment Squid Game and find work that is challenging, fulfilling, and meaningful.?

I can help you through the games to improve your odds.?

Three great tips and such a great way to share them. The job search game is full of challenges and ever changing depending on where and how you apply. I have not seen the show and yet can understand how challenging any game can be without a coach. If I was applying for work I would want someone who could help me navigate the process.

Great analogy Ben and I am excited to dig into this show, I hear it is totally binge worthy. Knowing the rules is key to any level of success, either in a new job, what your employer expects or posting on Linkedin. There are rules to follow to be successful.
