SPM 201: Making a Difference

SPM 201: Making a Difference

Participating in acts of service has been an integral part of my life journey. From a young age, I was taught the importance of helping others and giving back to my community. From volunteering at my local food pantry to planning and executing the construction of a Veterans Memorial for my Eagle Scout Service project, service acts?both big and small have allowed me to truly make a difference while learning valuable life lessons.

When I first arrived in Syracuse and enrolled in the Sport Management program, I was unaware of the Sport Management Club and the organization’s charitable work. After attending the first club meeting and learning more about the annual Charity Sports Auction, I immediately learned how I could get involved. Over the past two years, the organization has provided me the opportunity to engage with two things I am extremely passionate about—sports and community service.

Being part of this organization and contributing to the annual Charity Sports Auction has allowed me to witness firsthand the power of collective action in leaving a lasting impact on those in need. Furthermore, I have formed meaningful relationships with my peers. Collectively, during my two years involved in the event we have raised over $100,000 for worthy causes. Most notably, this past year we raised money for Tillie's Touch, an organization that helps local youth achieve academic excellence and participate in sports.

When I reflect on my experience as a whole, the most significant takeaway is that I have contributed to changing people’s lives. When I am having a bad day or am questioning whether I am doing enough, I think of how I am lucky enough to have opportunities that others do not have. Being involved in service has not only made me aware of the impact large charity events like the auction can have on people, but it has also allowed me to recognize the importance of simple acts of kindness and appreciate the little things in life.

Overall, being actively involved with the Charity Sports Auction has been the most rewarding experience during the first two years of my college career. I look forward to taking on greater responsibilities in the next two years and am excited for what the future holds. #Service #Purpose
