Spirituality Into Workplaces. The Business Solution For Profitability And Post-Pandemic Success?

In response to the article published on October 26 by Juan Prego “Nobody is listening”.

There are words that perhaps seem outside the business logic, but with the pandemic they have regained a lot of strength. Words like meditate, yoga, nature, space, resonance, ego. Is Spirituality Into The Workplace the Next Big Thing?

LISTEN to your inner voice, your inner self. The necessary pause that it forcefully brought the population with this pandemic.

The fast-paced life that we lead in the "era of technological growth" leaves no respite. We run nonstop, not looking many times if we are going in the right direction. The reason we claim internally is "I don't have time". Paradoxical, right? We don't have time to stop and think, but we do have time to run around like a headless chicken, without a clear direction.

As Juan Prego says in his article “Nobody is listening”, it is true, we do not listen. It could be said that we hear so many things that we are no longer clear on any of them. Such is the case that we do not even listen to ourselves. The ego is so big that it even surpasses the “inner self” itself. That little voice that tells you "stop", "look around" ... and, no way. Until a pandemic came. It stopped us suddenly. It left us at home, in a new situation, isolated from other humans. Living our lives in that kind of jail. That gave us TIME TO REFLECT.

It reminds me about "entrepreneurs don't get sick." An entrepreneur does not stop. He/She has a mission and at that moment, there are no walls. Everything is opportunities, "surmountable challenges". Work is no longer work. It is a new philosophy of life. Part of me. My friends, my outings, my day to day, breathe that mission. Until they arrive, moments when you take an obligatory rest, it can be a short vacation, and ... you get sick. Yes, suddenly you get sick, right at the worst moment.

This is when they appear, the well-known Adrenaline and Cortisol. The secretion of stress hormones makes pain or other symptoms not felt. Dozens of investigations prove the increase in illness on vacation or during a long weekend, in people with high levels of stress.

"When the individual is under great stress, the body takes care to keep all the functions in place. Symptoms of stress or exhaustion are ignored or neglected," says Dr. Peter Henningsen, head of the psychosomatic medicine unit from the University of Munich. "When stress subsides, problems come to light."

The boom that mindfulness has had in recent years, precisely part of that premise. You need to live in the present moment, more than future events or your past. To live that present moment, you must stop, reflect, look with perspective, understand. The goal is not to stop thinking, as it could be misunderstood. Meditating is a process of self-knowledge, living in the present, the now, words I guess you listened from Eckhart Tolle.

There my reflection on Spirituality Into The Workplace (for an Employee Wellness). The close relationship between both concepts, on which far apart they are at least in Western countries. Understanding that spirituality and religion are different things, I dare to paraphrase Yuval Harari “Spirituality is based on questions. Religion in giving answers”.

Those thoughts made me start a new business a few months ago, Dream Job Guru, a headhunting with purpose. The code of following your dreams and connecting with your life mission. That’s an invaluable win-win way of working. It’s our Mission, a way to help humans to achieve their life goals through their dream job.

Workplace spirituality has been defined as “a framework of organizational values evidenced in the culture that promote employees’ experience of transcendence through the work process, facilitating their sense of being connected to others in a way that provides feelings of completeness and joy” (Giacalone & Jurkiewicz, 2003).

Look inside yourself... That's where you'll find the answers. Listen to others, without prejudice or limitations. Understanding that it is not just you. Listening to each other as part of a complete process of aligning wishes, with actions and words.

Sharing thoughts about the good reflection given in the article by Juan Prego, that we are losing the true-north, claiming that we know the result, the causes, that we are so smart that we know the why of everything that happens. We even know clearly why we work on what we do, why we rush in life and where we are going. Something that with the pandemic, and globally, people have questioned "do I really know?".

Could it be that mental health is related to the economic performance of companies?

According to a recently article “Mental health and covid-19: the other side of the pandemic” in La Vanguardia:

In October 2020, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the WHO published a study in which it indicated that the pandemic had caused an increase in mental health disorders and, as a consequence, essential services had been paralyzed in the 93% of the countries of the world due to the increase in demand for this type of care. "
...
"One in five health professionals has experienced some type of mental health disorder due to the pandemic, according to a study published by the scientific journal Plos One. Specifically, among health professionals there are 27% who have experienced depression, 22 , 1% anxiety and 21.5% post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "

As a conclusion, do we have the real solution?

The business restructuring to continue growing economically, is it teleworking? Change my team? Lack of talent? … Possibly, it’s something deeper.

If you've made it this far, it's your time to reflect, give your thinking. I invite you to give your answer, a post, a comment, reshare:?

Have you heard similar cases in your environment? Did you change your life? Does this lack of global understanding resonate with you? Do you know a solution? Are we talking about a transitional system that will return to what it was before?
