Who: All those interested in learning or sharing about spirituality and mental health.

Sometimes recovery from mental health challenges, addictive behaviors and suicidal intensity looks like getting treatment from a mental health professional in the form of talk therapy or medication.

Sometimes it looks more like a spiritual awakening.

A holistic approach to healing takes into account not only our social, emotional and cognitive wellbeing, but also our "soul care", as my friend Sarah Gaer likes to say. In this #ElevateTheConvo twitter chat, we will be discussing topics of spirituality and ritual and how for many they provide pathways to recovery that augment or even substitute for more medicalized forms of healing.

Questions:

  1. What role does spirituality play in healing from mental health challenges, trauma, addictive behaviors, suicidal despair, and suicide/overdose bereavement?
  2. How do the best aspects of our world's faith traditions teach us about the power of ritual in helping individuals, families and communities through tough times? Share a story of how specific rituals have helped people cope.
  3. What are challenges in bringing spirituality, faith traditions, pastoral care and ritual into the conversation of mental health and suicide prevention?
  4. What do you see as the opportunities for bridge building and collaboration among the efforts of spiritual growth, ritual, mental health, and suicide prevention? Where are strategic partnerships thriving?
