SPIRITUAL (S01E05) - TESSELAARSDAL: An International Market

Contrary to popular belief, living in the #UnitedKingdom is bliss for #winelovers. Indeed, the Kingdom – for us, #England – produces very little wine, although we have to admit that the offer is growing. In the past, the country was rather focused on beers – ales – and spirits – gin, whisky, rum – and we owe a lot to their hard work, and hangovers! We explain England’s wealth of wine to its lack of national cuisine. Indeed, similarly to its gastronomy offer, the absence of wine production offers possibilities for extended worldwide imports and curiosity outside of the nation’s borders. Imports which include of course, South Africa and Tesselaarsdal Wines.

In countries like #France or #Italy, the production of wine is so important that the focus is on national origins, and New World wine lovers are unfortunately, rarely at the forefront of the market. In the United Kingdom, on the contrary, the offer and balance between #NewWorld and #OldWorld is absolutely fantastic. There are products for all tastes and budgets, and we can assure you, we have tried quite a few of them! And this is where wineries like Tesselaarsdal hugely benefit from this. Actually, the British market represents a very important part of the exports of South Africa.

Now... where to find these beautiful bottles that we have talking about. In London, there are a few places to purchase Tesselaarsdal; we recommend swig.co.uk, Handford Wines and Hedonism Wines. Now that indoor dining has reopened too, we can only recommend you to book yourself a table at Hide, and pair your meal with a bottle of Berene Sauls’ Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Finally, if staying at home is your preferred choice, then lamb chops or tuna will work marvellously with a bottle of red, while white will call for chicken or sushi if you feel inclined.

We hope that you have enjoyed discovering Tesselaarsdal as much as we have, that you have perhaps learned a thing or two – we have been overjoyed to finally start writing about wine –, and if you got your hands on one of these bottles while reading us, then that is even better!

This episode is our fifth – and third virtual – and we are grateful to Tesselaarsdal for having trusted us. With Spiritual, we create a documentary that allows wineries, breweries and distilleries to promote their works, products and people. If you own or work at a winery, brewery or distillery and would like to collaborate with us, then get in touch at [email protected]!

UK is also growing into sparkling wine segment as well with some Sussex-based producers (Hastings area). Not to mention Taittinger who also invested in Kent to produce sparkling wine with first bottles due by 2023.
