Spirit Super CEO Leeanne Turner steps down Jason Murray appointed new CEO

Long serving superannuation leader Leeanne Turner will retire her Chief executive position early next year having overseen the recent successful merger between Tasplan and MTAA Super to form Spirit Super.

Ms Turner has worked in the superannuation industry for 40 years, with many decades of leadership including as CEO of AvSuper and 11 years as CEO of MTAA/ Spirit Super.

“The plan for me personally has been to embed this merger, set Spirit Super on its path to future success and hand over to someone else to take the fund to the next stage,” Ms Turner said.

“I am proud to leave Spirit Super in a strong position, with strong investment performance, over $26b in funds under management, more than 320,000 members and our member best interest culture stronger than ever.”

Spirit Super Chair Naomi Edwards paid tribute to Ms Turner’s strong leadership in seeing the formation of Spirit Super through to fruition and positioning the fund firmly as an emerging leader in the competitive superannuation market.

“Leeanne’s role in this merger has been outstanding.?She has led with passion and enthusiasm to integrate our people and processes.?The Trustee and staff hold her in the highest regard.”?

Ms Turner has made a significant contribution to the broader Australian superannuation industry through her directorships of ASFA, ISA and FEAL.?Her leadership saw MTAA Super receive numerous industry awards including the 2015 and 2017 Conexus Financial ‘Medium Fund of the Year Award’.?In 2014, Ms Turner was awarded Fund Executive of the Year by FEAL.?

Former long serving Chair of MTAA Super, the Hon. John Brumby, also paid tribute to Leeanne Turner, saying “over the past decade, Leeanne has made a huge contribution to MTAA Super and its successful merger as Spirit Super.?Leeanne has been a tireless advocate for member interests and outcomes and has positioned Spirit Super exceptionally well for ongoing success”.

Following an extensive search Jason Murray has been appointed the next CEO of Spirit Super.?Mr Murray is currently Chief of Member Experience at QSuper and has significant financial services experience spanning banking, insurance and superannuation in Australia and the UK, overseeing many areas including product, innovation, digital, business development and distribution.

Jason Murray will commence early 2022.
