Spinning causes ASKhole? Behaviors

Spinning causes ASKhole? Behaviors

One guarantee for any leader is that they have been caught in the spin - that day-to-day fire fighting that makes a leader feel like they accomplished nothing at the end of the day.

Even more problematic - employees also spin.

Spinning and stress go hand in hand.

When you combine spinning and stress, you are likely to see some ASKhole? behaviors.

During my keynotes this year, I have been asking audience members what makes them spin through an interactive polling tool. Sure enough, many of the things that make employees spin could be classified as ASKhole? behaviors.

In rank order, here are what they say makes them spin:

These issues that cause leaders to spin are common across my audiences, regardless of industry.

What responses from that list above?resonate for you???(I am imagining you shaking you head, agreeing with so many of them!)?

When?I look at this list, I?would say #1-7 are all indicators of leaders who have?fallen into the ASKhole? Trap.? The simple image below offers a high level insight into how leaders land themselves in the ASKhole? trap.

When?I look at this list, I?would say #1-7 are all indicators of leaders who have?fallen into the ASKhole? Trap.? My book that is soon to hit the shelves, Leading out of the ASKhole? Trap is going to offer you a ton more strategies, but I?can offer you some quick wins for you today.

If there is any hope of avoiding the ASKhole? trap, the employee needs to stop spinning.

The leader's support is the best, most effective way to help the employee slow down and disrupt their spin.

The leader needs to get out of their own spin if they are going to support employees doing the same.

Here are three tips to help reduce your spin:

Tip #1: Focus on what is in your control

These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure.

Tip #2:? Have grace?& generosity

You know those employee and colleague behaviors?that drive you crazy???

Those behaviors are likely fueled by the spin.??

So leverage your grace and generosity for that person to?think about what is beyond their unwanted behavior.??

Tip #3:?Put words on it

I?love the expression, "If you name it you can tame it!"??

In other words, name your spin.??

If you can name your spin, you can help your employees and colleagues name their spin which will of course, reduce your spin.??

It's not enough to complain about the stress, the workload, the pebbles in your shoes.??Put words on the triggers for the stress, the workload, and those dang pebbles in your shoes.??Let others know what those triggers are.

Then you can tame it!

I?would love to learn more about how you spin?(or don't spin) and the work you are doing.?

Let's connect.?? Kerri

PS -?If you want a snapshot of how your teams are feeling about their work, let's talk about doing a quick culture assessment.? So valuable!?
