Spell Checker: The underrated User Experience (UX) that might determined the faith of Google vs. Altavista

Altavista was an established web search engine before Google. Although there might have been differences in the performance of the two engines, these differences could not be the key factor that gave Google the superior advantage over Altavista.

We can argue that the advantage actually came from an underrated user-experience feature offered by Google: Spell Checker. In the early generations of the search engines, any deviation (even a minor one) in the term entered at the prompt would ended up to no or highly-unrelated results. This might took a high toll on Altavista. At then end, the Altavista's users blamed the disappointing results on the search engine instead of their own input.

On the other hand, spell checker offered by google would give it a second chance to search for the actual term that user were looking for, instead of presenting unrelated results generated based on the user's misspelled input.

Just a thought.
