The Speed of Your Transformation is the Speed of Your Practice

The Speed of Your Transformation is the Speed of Your Practice

Transformation is not something that happens overnight. It’s not something that can be guaranteed to unfold in a neat, predictable timeline. But what I?can?guarantee is that transformation?will?happen—at the exact speed you're willing to practice.

The word?practice?often gets misunderstood. We tend to think of it as something we do in preparation for the real thing. But in the context of transformation, practice?is?the real thing. It’s about showing up and doing the work, even when—especially when—you have really good reasons not to.

Resistance Doesn’t Announce Itself as Resistance

When we think of resistance, we imagine something obvious: an outright refusal, a lack of motivation, or sheer laziness. But real resistance is much more insidious. It shows up as completely valid, totally reasonable justifications for not practicing.

Maybe you had an exhausting night, and today just isn’t the day to push yourself. Maybe you were ready to sit down and do the work, but then your in-laws called, and they almost?never?ask for help, so of course, you should be there for them. Maybe work got unexpectedly busy, or an emergency popped up, or life simply happened in a way that makes this?not the right time.

See, resistance never sounds like resistance. It sounds like life. It shows up as circumstances that you genuinely believe require your attention, and because of that, it?feels?like there’s no choice but to step away from your practice. And this is precisely why transformation doesn’t happen for most people.

The Truth About Practice

There’s no magic to transformation, just like there’s no magic to mastery. If you want to get stronger, you lift weights. If you want to become a better writer, you write. If you want to grow as a leader, you lead. There’s no shortcut. You?will grow as fast as you are willing to practice, and that is the sum total of it.

But what makes practice difficult isn’t the doing itself—it’s everything that competes for our attention and convinces us that we should stop. The practice?isn’t just the action; it’s the commitment to doing it in the face of all the reasons not to.

This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. It doesn’t mean you never stumble, never fall off the wagon, never get thrown off course. Life?will?interrupt. You?will?get derailed. And that’s okay. The practice is not about never failing—it’s about coming back, again and again, no matter how many times you get knocked off track.

How to Stay in the Practice

  1. Recognize Resistance for What It Is

Start noticing how resistance shows up in your life. What does it sound like? What are the convincing arguments it makes? The more you can see it for what it is, the less likely you are to fall for it.

2. Commit to Small, Consistent Actions

Practice doesn’t have to be big to be powerful. It just has to be?consistent. If transformation feels overwhelming, scale it down. Do something small, but do it regularly.

3. Expect to Get Knocked Off Track

The goal is not to never stumble. The goal is to get better at getting back up. Every time you return to your practice, you strengthen your capacity to stay in it.

4. Remove the Drama

Falling off doesn’t mean anything about you. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy or incapable or that you lack discipline. It just means life happened. No big deal. Get back to it.

The Only Real Variable in Transformation

The only thing standing between where you?are now and where you want to be is how often you’re willing to show up for the work. That’s it. Not talent. Not luck. Not external circumstances. Just practice.

So the question is: How fast do you want to grow?

Absolutely! ?? True transformation is a journey, not a quick fix. The more we commit to consistent action, reflection, and growth, the more powerful the shift.

Thanks for this, Adam. Reflecting on my first year of transformation during my Accomplishment Coaching I've learned that when I frame practice as play, I am more willing to get messy.
