At the Speed of Inspiration
I've always preferred working on larger paintings and pastels, but recently, I've been enjoying working small and fast.
The inspiration is quick, in the past they would sit in my subconscious for years until actually finding a space but now they come as I see them. Small snapshots of life, place, people and of course nature.
I want the viewer to enjoy a feeling of a moment, it's less about getting lost in the details but instead to feel the energy and spontaneous feeling of a snapshot. From that moment, a viewer can put their experience and memory into the work and it becomes theirs.
The Cottonwoods is a study of people at the park, it is rich with colors and light and the feeling of a hot afterrnoon the spring at the park. The faces are who ever you decide they are, they are all encased in their own worlds as you watch from behind, a bit sequestered from their activity, as it often feels exploring the world alone.
Hagerman 1: The Pond-it's the darkness and depth of water that always attracts me. This day it was bees buzzing, dragonflies hovering and rattlesnakes sighing, Again, it is the quick execution of light and shadow and trying less to be so fixated on detail.
I am working on a series of these studies, more to come soon.
