Voice recognition software use has increased over recent years. Both major operating systems have built in voice to text and speech recognition tools that require no software purchases. Given that most of us are working from home, it would be wise to consider utilizing Speech-to-Text (STT) to help perform your work. Once you understand how to use it, it will make your life a whole lot easier.
In fact, I am writing this blog by speaking into my computer mic. I am doing this from our STT software. Writing will only slow my thought process down. I can write any document just by speaking into my computer. My words are written as fast as my mouth can move.
STT has come a long way over the last 20 years. STT first started in 1997, with a software called Dragon NaturallySpeaking by Nuance Communication. But it wasn’t until decades later that software companies started to perfect its capabilities. Today using speech to text has never been easier. Thousands of businesses are using it to their advantage and allowing them to shorten writing time tenfold.
Audio books, touch screen, mobile voice text, and apps are just a few technologies that have made our lives more convenient. We continue to push the limits in technology to make it easier for the end users and much less complicated. Though dictation software is pretty good at recognizing different voices, it's not perfect. So, before you get started, make sure you know how to maximize its capabilities.
1. Speak naturally - Dictation apps learn your voice and speech patterns over time. And if you're going to spend any time with them, you want to be comfortable. Speak naturally. If you're not getting 90% accuracy initially, try enunciating more.
2. Punctuate - When you dictate, you have to say each period, comma, question mark, and so forth. The software isn't smart enough to figure it out on its own.
3. Learn a few commands - Take the time to learn a few simple commands, such as "new line" to enter a line break. There are different commands for composing, editing, and operating your device. Commands may differ from app to app, so learn the ones that apply to the tool you choose.
4. Know your limits - Especially on mobile devices, some tools have a time limit for how long they can listen, usually around 30 to 45 seconds. Glance at the screen from time to time to make sure you haven't blown past the mark.
5. Practice - It takes time to adjust to voice recognition software, but it gets easier the more you practice. Some of the more sophisticated apps invite you to train by reading passages or doing other short drills. Don't shy away from tutorials, help menus, and on-screen cheat sheets.
Once you have mastered these 5 steps, STT is going to be second nature to you.
With the pace our world it is going now, finding ways to maximize your time has never been more important that it is today. You shouldn’t have to pay for STT to take advantage of this service.
Our team at STA Group have built a free download so you can take advantage of it today. Our program speaks 125 different languages so it shouldn’t be a problem understanding, no matter where you live in the world.
If you use Speech-to-Text on your mobile device, then you know how easy it can be. Now it’s available to use anywhere on any device. Maximize your time by minimizing your efforts. To learn more, click here.
