Speculative Future Lifestyles 2040 (Part 1) — The 4 Lifestyle Trends
No Hocus-Pocus Here: The Science Behind Effective Futures Thinking (We’ll Show You the Way)
This is the first installment of our?four-part series?on?Speculative Future Lifestyles 2040. Building upon our previous article on the power of Futures Thinking, we delve deeper into its effectiveness in helping businesses seize opportunities and navigate the uncharted territory of the future.
Throughout this series, we?aim to?showcase the immense potential?of Futures Thinking in shaping our world. We will demonstrate in detail how each step of the Futures Thinking Method can be expanded to generate invaluable insights and practical outcomes.
Before we embark on this journey, I invite you to revisit our?previous article?on Futures Thinking, which laid the foundation for this exploration into speculative future lifestyle trends.
The Four Speculative Lifestyle Trends in 2040
Why speculate?on future lifestyles specifically? Truth be told, at NOK, we were initially inspired by our project,?Homm, to explore the futures of automobility. As we progressed through the Futures Thinking process around this theme, scanning for trends and drivers, conducting futures wheel and affinity mapping, we discovered an?abundance of opportunities?lying within?four distinct lifestyle trends.
Our team strongly believes that?these themes deserve further exploration?to uncover the genuine needs that go beyond mobility. These exciting opportunities will be unveiled in our upcoming articles as we explore each method used. In this article, we present?four compelling hypotheses on people’s lifestyle trends in 2040, based on the first three steps of our Futures Thinking framework.
Hypothesis 1: No-Tech-Zones — Rediscovering the Core Essentials of Human Living
Imagine a future?without technology. Too far-fetched? But what if the constant advancement of technology is actually what leads us there? As we’re bombarded with overwhelming amounts of information, the need for a break from the digital noise becomes more apparent. That’s where “No-Tech-Zones” come in — sanctuaries for those seeking respite from the chaos.
Our hypothesis predicts the rise of these zones as people?yearn for a simpler, more authentic human experience. To stay ahead of this trend, we use Futures Thinking to explore ways to combine technology with essential human values, fostering balanced lifestyles. It’s about finding a delicate balance between our digital world and being human.
Reaching a point of?complete detachment from technology?seems nearly impossible, given the myriad of benefits and conveniences it has bestowed upon us. However, the challenge lies in?finding a harmonious coexistence?with technology, where its presence seamlessly integrates into our lives without becoming intrusive. Can we create an interaction with technology that is nearly imperceptible, blending completely into the fabric of our daily existence?
Hypothesis 2: Borderless Citizens — High Mobility, High Freedom
In 2040, a fascinating phenomenon takes shape as themed cities with strict regulations give rise to a unique group of individuals:?the borderless citizens. Through stringent government regulations that?limit personal possession ownership, individuals are freed from liabilities. This, in turn, intensifies their irresistible?attraction to the diverse city experiences. Why settle for just one location when you can live?on water,?atop mountains, or even bask in the glow of a manmade moon?
Thanks to a seamless global network,?high mobility and freedom become the new norm, empowering individuals to?embrace nomadic lifestyles?and explore a myriad of locales. Loyalty to a single city becomes a thing of the past as people crave adventure and cultural immersion on a global scale.
This hypothesis challenges conventional notions and unlocks a world of possibilities. We can envision the implications of this trend and design interconnected systems that?facilitate seamless transitions, empowering borderless communities to thrive.
Hypothesis 3: Priority on Fun and Stimulation– Redefining Work-Life Balance
As technology increasingly takes over mundane tasks, individuals in 2040 find themselves with ample time and energy for leisure. This hypothesis predicts a surge in?demand for highly stimulating recreational activities, leading to a proliferation of new forms of entertainment and fitness pursuits.
With this newfound freedom, governments face the?opportunity to foster citizen loyalty?through encouraging civic contributions. However, questions arise about the impact on mental well-being and the potential for the?abuse of adrenaline?and dopamine-inducing substances to sustain mental stimulation.
Hypothesis 4: Mini North Koreas — Siloed Innovation and Elitism

In 2040, smart cities may evolve into?self-governed entities?propelled by a shared vision and objective. However, the fierce competition among cities can give?rise to an elitist mindset?among both the government and the citizens. Rather than addressing urgent global challenges, there is a risk of the government?placing undue emphasis on superficial reputation?as a means to maintain a competitive edge.
Consequently, this approach could have detrimental effects, leading to a reversal of globalization and?cities isolating themselves, thereby impeding collaboration and global progress.?Nonetheless, it’s important to acknowledge that the intense competition resulting from this mindset may also?stimulate unparalleled technological advancements.
Even if these remarkable technological advancements primarily benefit the cities themselves, they can?indirectly inspire other countries?to follow suit and create even more advanced innovations for their own citizens to enjoy. The competitive nature of smart cities can drive a?ripple effect, motivating nations to strive for greater achievements and foster a culture of continuous progress. As a result, the?influence of these advancements extends beyond the city boundaries, shaping the broader landscape of technological development worldwide.
