Special Issue: World VFX Day
A collective of visual effects studios, organisations and professionals have launched an exciting new annual event, 'World VFX Day'. Scheduled for the first time on 8 December 2023, this global celebration aims to shine a spotlight on the visual effects industry, which enables filmmakers to visualise stories beyond the realms of imagination.
Visual effects (VFX) has long been seen as the unsung heroes behind the awe-inspiring magic seen on the big screen and television. World VFX Day aims to foster a greater understanding of the skills and artistry throughout the entertainment industry and among consumers.
But why 8 December? It is the birthday of Georges Méliès. (8 December 1861 - 21 January 1938)
Often referred to as the "grandfather" of VFX, Georges Méliès is a pivotal figure in the history of visual effects. Méliès was a French illusionist and film director who was instrumental in the early development of special effects in cinema. His innovative use of techniques such as stop-motion, multiple exposures and time-lapse photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the foundations for the modern VFX industry.
Celebrating World VFX Day in honour of Georges Méliès is a fitting tribute to his pioneering contributions. Méliès' work, particularly in films such as "A Trip to the Moon" (1902), showcased his creativity and ingenuity, inspiring generations of filmmakers and VFX artists. By dedicating this day to him, the industry celebrates its roots and the imaginative spirit that drives visual storytelling. #VFX #worldvfx #worldvfxday
