Special Issue: Fear Not

It was a hard morning to get out of bed for me, not gonna lie. But my buddy ChatGPT helped me get some perspective and I thought I'd share it with you. It's not about people self-selecting into doing the right thing because it's right -- it rarely is. It's about finding a way to secure that "what's right" has a future, and it comes down to momentum and... yeah... money. Here's some thinking around what the future of climate mitigation looks like through the 2025 lens, and there is definitely reason to be hopeful. Fear not readers. Fear not.

With the recent political shift in the U.S., many people are concerned about what lies ahead for climate action. And while changes in leadership can alter the pace of environmental policy, the movement for a sustainable, resilient planet has grown far beyond any single administration or political moment. Over the past decade, a vast coalition has emerged—one that includes forward-thinking businesses, local governments, financial leaders, activists, and everyday citizens. In many ways, this coalition is powered by a unique mix of capitalism and community that keeps driving environmental progress, regardless of political circumstances.

As unsettling as this moment may feel, it’s crucial to remember that climate solutions are already embedded in the global economy. Capitalism, when it prioritizes responsibility and innovation, has become a powerful force for climate action. From companies reimagining their operations to investors backing businesses with strong environmental commitments, the market is now rewarding sustainable practices. This alignment between profitability and environmental responsibility has led to new levels of climate resilience. As demand for eco-friendly products, clean energy, and ethical investments continues to rise, more companies recognize that sustainability isn’t just a side project—it’s the way forward.

One of the clearest signs of hope lies in how sustainability has become central to business strategy. Companies are pursuing climate action not just because it’s the “right” thing to do but because it strengthens their bottom line and builds loyalty among customers, employees, and communities. Investors, too, are increasingly focused on businesses with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments, recognizing that sustainable practices reduce long-term risks. This growing push for corporate accountability is transforming entire industries and setting new standards that are difficult to ignore or roll back. In essence, we’re witnessing a shift where sustainable capitalism is emerging as a model for a thriving economy and a livable planet.

This shift extends beyond boardrooms and balance sheets. Consumers are making choices that reflect their environmental values, pushing for transparency, and holding companies accountable. Community-driven demand for renewable energy, zero-waste products, and fair labor practices continues to grow, keeping sustainability on the agenda even when political climates change. Cities and local governments, too, are setting ambitious climate goals, creating regional frameworks for action that endure regardless of national policies. These efforts show that climate resilience is increasingly embedded into our communities and economies at every level.

As the landscape of climate action shifts, it’s clear that we can’t rely solely on political leadership to guide the way. Real change often comes from collective, on-the-ground momentum, driven by individuals, innovators, and business leaders who refuse to sit back. Accountability, collaboration, and persistence are what will keep this movement strong, and we can all play a role by continuing to advocate, support sustainable businesses, and push for ethical practices.

So while political winds may shift, the groundwork we’ve laid won’t disappear. The market has spoken: sustainability is here to stay, and it’s deeply embedded in our economic fabric. Let’s keep pushing forward, fostering the kind of climate action that thrives in the private sector and at the community level, independent of political shifts. This isn’t just a reaction to the moment—it’s a movement that’s designed to endure, proving that we can—and will—continue to create the future we all deserve.

All floss no substance. Would have preferred to hear about the silver lining (if any) on a Trump presidency when it comes to Environmental Policy.

We need to maximize leveraging the profit motive and align incentives to make sustainability a driver of business growth. I have recently written an article about this: https://www.conspiracyoflove.co/inspiration-articles/purpose-needs-to-grow-up

Tuesday was stunning for so many reasons. However, let's keep putting these positive perspectives into the conversation while never, NEVER underestimating what we are up against. Personally I'm encouraged by how much is going on in the sustainable investment world. I went to half a dozen panels on climate finance during climate week. Among many other factors, we need mobilized capital on our side.
