Special Focus: ?? The International Picket Line
Le Dispatch
Le Dispatch offers weekly insight into France's film & TV industry, geared towards the industry's leading professionals
What's going on??
The Writers' Guild of America is well into its 2nd month of striking, largely linked to the streamer impacts on the film & TV industry, the threats of AI taking over writers' jobs, sub-par remuneration, and a host of other factors.?With on-location Hollywood production virtually at a standstill, the European landscape is taking notice?and demonstrating their support for their American counterparts.
What does this mean for the industry??
The strike is quite literally?putting scripted productions to a halt, in Hollywood for now, but more than likely in other states soon enough. While the American Directors' Guild just recently inked an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the WGA was quick to pour cold water on the idea that this applied to them.?It remains to be seen what the way out is, and whether or not the American media will opt for a streamer agreement similar to the one in place in France.?
What are the international effects??
With productions at a standstill in the U.S., it's likely that if production is to continue on pace, the responsible parties will have to look to set up shop in other countries/regions.?Furthermore, the American writer's strike is encouraging others to take part as well, with the unions' English counterparts having organized a national day of protest on June 14th. In speaking with the President of France's SACD,?we got an insider's point of view.
