SPECIAL EDITION: toth shop celebrates seven years

seven.?today, toth shop celebrates seven years in business.?

there’ve been lots of wins, milestones, growth, losses, fails, stumbles, joy, fear, hundreds of clients, thousands of projects, dozens of classes taught, conversations across three or four time zones at times, in-person meetings around the country, too many zooms and googlemeets to count, new levels of headaches, bright lights, dark corners, kinko’s trips at 11pm, 2am tossing and turning, 5am copywriting sessions, annoying emails, good emails, a pandemic, inside jokes, cries, laughs, and then cries that turned into laughs (and vice versa), aha! moments, come to jesus conversations, ‘and just like that…’ realizations.?

across the years, it’s been all the things. (sometimes, it’s all the things all in the same day.)

every day, it’s been a a practice in agility, in pivoting, in balancing, in bouncing back.

it's been a profoundly human experience.?

the work has been managing the emotions first and the logistics second of all the things at once - and pushing forward. ?

who the hell would sign up for all of that?! i do; we do. because there’s a vision of a business or a lifestyle that only we know; our own version of a city on the hill, so to speak.? the work is trying to get there, constantly.

if there’s been anything over the last seven years that’s moved that vision forward, it’s been lessons; quirky lessons dropped hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly. lessons all the time.?

lessons only matter if you’re paying attention to them. lessons only matter when you acknowledge them and then do something differently, more informed, more interesting because of them.??

there have been lots of life lessons over these 2,555 days; here are seven.?

mindset really is everything. if you told me 7.5 years ago that what i was going to do what just going to be a big practice in managing my mind, i would have blown it off. no one told me how much of a mind game all this would be. as much as owning a business is about the business or money or operations or work or whatever, it actually has more to do with how you talk to your brain, and how your brain talks to you. you have to manage it constantly. you are 100% responsible for that. it’s some of the hardest work i do.?

you can’t do anything alone; i can’t do anything alone. this is the lesson god sends me constantly. after 38 years of life and seven years in business, i think i finally realized that i’m not getting any cosmic points for doing it alone or by myself.?

stop teaching with all the fluff. you don’t have to teach with PPTs and GIFs and videos and flare and drama and show. you can teach others with examples, stories, real talk. you teach others by telling the truth.?

the highs and lows are always coming. they each come and go. i heard a meditation recently that was a story (and i’m paraphrasing): a student asks a teacher, ‘why are my meditations so difficult?’ and the teacher says, ‘it’ll pass’. the same student comes back, and says, ‘my meditations are going great’, and the teacher says, ‘it’ll pass’. it’s a constant balance of the highs and the lows. you have to be ready - physically, operationally, emotionally, spiritually - for both, all the time.?

the world - and humans - will always need two things: critical thinking and celebration. we need more paying attention, listening, reflecting, serious thought, smart thinking; we need more calls to ask that of each other; to push each other’s brains more seriously. we also need more positivity, joy, hope, celebrations, cheerleading. there are times when neither is easy or fun. but we are always better for both.?

get a grip. i sometimes say - or think - this about other people; but i’ve mostly had to learn to say it to myself. it’s the great anchor, the great reality check, the greatest reset to then keep moving.?

exclamation points. they’re a privilege; not a right. why do humans use so many? i’ll never understand it. use them only when you mean them.?

toth shop, a 100% female-owned business, continues to grow and thrive, pivot and learn, just be and keep pushing forward.

thank you for all the support getting here; and here’s to all that’s to come.
