Special edition for Saint Nicholas Day

Special edition for Saint Nicholas Day

In this special edition of the IoT M2M Times, we look at Saint Nicholas.

  1. Why is there a special edition of the IoT M2M Times?
  2. St. Nicholas gifts for 2700 decision-makers on my German-language mailing list
  3. LwM2M gifts for readers outside DACH
  4. St. Nicholas and Santa Claus

Why is there a special edition of the IoT M2M Times?

The story on St Nicholas' Day is a tradition for me. I've been coming up with a story for years and "wrapping" the boring wireless technology and antennas into a funny story. The effort for the IoT M2M Times is limited because I already had the text and pictures. The only thing I had to put together was the origin of the men in the red coat.

St. Nicholas gifts for 2700 decision-makers on my German-language mailing list

Dear ....,

My boot for the door has filled up. Unfortunately, St. Nicholas has made another mistake. He is old and scattered and has put lots of IoT SIM cards and IoT hardware in my boot. Nicholas lives analogue and relaxed. He is not networked via Xing, Linkedin, Twitter or Facebook. Otherwise, he would know that I have more than enough SIM cards and evaluation kits.

I would like to exchange the superfluous hardware, software and LwM2M test accounts for chocolate. Besides the chocolate bar, the exchange partner should also have a real wireless IoT project.

Who would like to exchange with me? The sweets will go back to the little tots at the local kindergarten. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

The exchange objects:

1) An akorIoT SensPRO with BG95-M3, STM32L496, various sensors, charging electronics, FreeRTOS and LwM2M stack worth 250 Euros. The code is open source. LwM2M is great and handles the profiles for communication, device management, bootstrapping and FOTA. LwM2M works on NB-IoT, LTE-M, LTE, 5G NR, Wi-Fi over IP on UDP or TCP. Furthermore on non-IP carriers such as on NB-IoT Non-IP, SMS, LoRaWAN and if requested with carrier pigeons. The IoT SIM card, a Wi-Fi head and the LwM2M test account are included free of charge.

2) 28 Wi-Fi buttons with ESP32 with radio approval (RED/FCC) with display, microphone and sensor with LwM2M stack with application open source worth 20 USD. In addition, 28 IoT SIM cards with corresponding LwM2M test account.

3) 70 IoT SIM cards from Crout with LwM2M test account. The SIM cards are specially designed for old men. Niklaus and Santa Claus both run delivery services to make children happy around the world. The IoT SIM cards have features similar to those in the iPhone. When switched on, the SIM card connects to the SIM card server and loads the appropriate IMSI. The card can manage up to 7 IMSIs. For Germany, Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica are preset. The management of the SIM cards is done by Crout, the system integrator or the end customer. The new high-end toys in Santa's factory are all equipped with these SIM cards. Since it is a pre-paid (pay as you go) SIM card, children on all continents can recharge the credit as they wish. The 70 SIM cards also come with an LwM2M test account.

4) 100 LwM2M trial account without hardware. If you have a cellular radio module (NB-IoT, LTE.M, GPRS, LTE, UMTS), it usually includes an LwM2M client. With the right AT commands, you can send data to the LwM2M server and retrieve it via REST API.

One cool Wi-Fi button I'm keeping for myself and 29 I'm giving away. I need it to test my LwM2M test account. I'm planning the world's first LwM2M control of Christmas trees in my city. On my command, the lights will flash in time to "Merry Christmas". I just have to talk to the municipal utilities about how many trees I can group together. Not that tomorrow I'll be in the figure or even the New York Times as the crazy IoT expert from Neustadt who triggered a black-out.

At the SensPRO we have to do a raffle. The 28 Wi-Fi buttons could be enough. The 70 SIM cards as well. We don't worry about the 100 LwMM2M test accounts. Sponsors: 1. akorIoT SensPRO: Triptec, www.akoriot.com , 2. IoT/M2M Cookbook, Harald Naumann, www.lte-modem.com , 3. 30 Wi-Fi buttons, 200 IoT SIM cards, 200 LwM2M test accounts, Crout, www.crout.de . Thanks again to all the sponsors. Participation in the promotion is limited until 22 December 2021. If possible, the lucky winners will be notified before Christmas. As all will receive an LwM2M test account, they will be unlocked promptly.

Thank you in advance for your enquiry about modules and antennas. For exchanging of chocolate, please email me to harald.naumann(at)lte-modem.com . I wish you a peaceful 3rd Advent.?

Best regards from Lower Saxony

The 100 LwM2M test accounts will probably not be called up by my German-speaking customers. If you also want to have an account for testing, just get in touch. We sell the akorIoT SensPRO, Wifi buttons and PrePaid IoT SIM cards to B2B customers with real IoT projects worldwide. Just contact the email harald.naumann (at) lte-modem.com .

St. Nicholas and Santa Claus

Es wurde kein Alt-Text für dieses Bild angegeben.

As a child, I used to wonder why two old men with white beards and red coats would bring presents in quick succession. First St. Nicholas and then Santa Claus. I thought they were both great because they both always had presents for the children.

Now the second old man we possibly owe to the Dutch emigrants in New York. Coca Cola later gave him the company colours red and white. The figure of Father Christmas goes back mainly to the European legends about St. Nicholas. However, he is by no means the same as St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas of Myra was a bishop in the 4th century who is the subject of numerous legends. As early as the Middle Ages, children were given presents on St. Nicholas' day of remembrance, 6 December, often on the evening before. This date used to be the day on which presents were given. It was only in the course of the Reformation and as a result of its rejection that the veneration of saints was placed on Christmas in many countries.

In addition to St. Nicholas, the symbolic figure of the Christ Child had developed in numerous regions of the German-speaking world, also in distinction to the "Holy Christ", whom Martin Luther had substituted for St. Nicholas. The custom of giving presents to children at Christmas was propagated by Luther from around 1535 as an alternative to the previous custom of giving presents on St Nicholas' Day. In this way, the children's interest was to be directed towards Christ instead of the veneration of saints. Since the Reformation, the giving of presents had been moved to Christmas Eve. However, St. Nicholas also remained popular among the people as the bearer of gifts. European emigrants brought the Saint Nicholas custom with them to the USA. Especially in the Dutch colonies, the Sinterklaasfeest was celebrated. Saint Nicholas was the patron saint of Nieuw Amsterdam, later New York. The Dutch Sint Nicolaas or Sinterklaas became the English Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus.

Today's popular myth of Santa Claus travelling in a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer, entering homes through the chimney at night and distributing gifts, dates back to the poem The Night before Christmas, published anonymously in 1823. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weihnachtsmann

Depending on the country, there are also other characters with different names. But all of them have the task of distributing presents.

Outlook

As you can see, this year I am exchanging LwM2M test servers and the hardware for them. There will be more about LwM2M in the next issues. I hope my story with the LwM2M gifts could inspire some ideas.

Artur Wróbel Thank you for the Like. The software to send the 2700 email got stuck yesterday morning. I did not notice it. I was busy with offers for my clients. 500 email were sent in the morning. The rest after work. By midnight the first responses came in. It's a great project with a cellular gateway in it. The distance between the gateway and the objects is very small. I can therefore use almost any radio technology. I don't yet know whether it makes sense to let LwM2M work on every object/sensor. I could summarise the status of all objects in a new profile. I am planning the same in another project with sensors based on Neomesh from Neocortec. For me, the sensors in Neomesh are simply analogue inputs. The fact that they can be far away via the mesh is unimportant.
