I studied communication, media, and journalism in college. I interned at a local TV station, eager to be part of an industry built on uncovering truth and sharing stories that shape the world. At their core, news, media, and entertainment are meant to inform, challenge, and inspire. Investigative reporting exposes the harsh but necessary truths of our time. Entertainment transports us, immersing us in stories that help us see the world through different eyes. But for media to truly reflect the world, it must embrace diversity of thought.

I remember sitting in the newsroom, watching stories unfold in real time—stories that shaped public opinion, policy, and culture. But too often, I noticed gaps. Entire communities were missing from the narrative. Perspectives were left unheard. I realized that if media is meant to be a mirror to society, that mirror was cracked, reflecting only fragments of reality. Diverse voices are not a luxury; they are a necessity.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

?? Authentic Representation Matters – When people can see themselves at the anchor's desk or in the films they watch, it validates their existence. Media has the power to shape identity, and when only a select few are represented, entire communities can be erased.

?? Different Perspectives Make for Better Storytelling – I learned early on that no story is one-dimensional. Trustworthy journalism digs deeper, questioning assumptions and presenting a complete picture. The same goes for entertainment—diverse voices create richer, more nuanced narratives that resonate on a deeper level.

?? Media Has a Responsibility to Challenge, Not Reinforce, Stereotypes – For many of us, we start our day with the news and end it with the news. This constant exposure informs and shapes our understanding of the world. When media lacks diversity, it risks reinforcing harmful biases instead of breaking them. However, when diverse voices are included, they challenge misconceptions, humanize experiences, and promote understanding.

?? Diversity Fuels Creativity and Innovation – Some of the most groundbreaking journalism and unforgettable storytelling have come from voices that were once silenced. When different perspectives collide, they spark fresh ideas, pushing the boundaries of storytelling in ways that captivate, educate, and inspire.

?? Media Shapes Society—It Must Reflect It Accurately – Journalism is not just a profession, it's a responsibility. Entertainment is not just a pastime, it's a mirror to our society. Both are meant to be a critical examination of our world. To maintain its integrity, media must include the full spectrum of human experience.

As someone who has been behind the scenes, watching how stories are selected, shaped, and shared, I know firsthand that the voices in the room matter. If we want a media landscape that genuinely serves the public, we must demand diversity—not as a checkbox but as a fundamental principle.
