Special Edition: Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day
School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence
Part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
In honor of Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day, we’ve put together a quick round-up of how our faculty team is on the leading edge of efforts to use this impactful technology for social good.
Stay tuned for more on #SCAI contributions to advancing AI education and research underway here at 美国亚利桑那州立大学 .
SCAI team helps create AI-powered, 3D bone atlas to stop elder abuse
Kevin Gary has joined forces with forensic anthropologist Katelyn Bolhofner in the ASU New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences to develop AI tools that tackle a difficult, growing problem: elder abuse. The team has created software that will help experts tell the difference between accidental bone fractures and those that are the result of intentional harm or neglect. They hope to improve health and justice outcomes for older Americans.
Industrial engineering uses AI to create systems that print personalized, reusable furniture
3Dnatives highlighted SCAI efforts to develop AI tools and algorithms that make 3D printing faster, more sustainable and provide more accessible creative tools for designers and engineers. Feng Ju , program chair of SCAI’s industrial engineering program is working with the team at Haddy furniture to enable 3D printers to work as quickly as possible without decreasing quality or increasing waste.
AI to secure the future
SCAI faculty have received three DEPSCoR awards from the United States Department of Defense and will conduct engineering research relevant to the nation’s science and technology missions. ASU was one of only three universities to receive multiple awards. Adil Ahmad , Rakibul Hasan and Nakul Gopalan will each receive up to $600,000 over a three-year period to pursue research in cybersecurity, cyber deception and AI solutions in robotics.
AI and the joy of living
'YZ' Yezhou Yang is working to bridge the generation gap in generative AI. He recently delivered a presentation called “AI and the Joy of Living” to approximately 100 senior citizens in the Lifelong Learning Auditorium at Mirabella at ASU , a retirement community on the university’s campus. As part of the AI Innovation Challenge from Technology at Arizona State University , Yang is working to adapt large language models, like ChatGPT, to make them more user-friendly for older adults.
Doctoral student leads AI workshop in Kenya
Gedeon Muhawenayo , a doctoral student working under the supervision of Hannah Kerner recently attended Data Science Africa(DSA) Summer School in Nyeri, Kenya, where he led a machine learning for remote sensing workshop, training fellow graduate students on how to deal with large sets of Earth observation data as part of efforts to promote food security.

Deepfakes and deep deception
Deepfakes — highly convincing but fake images, videos and voice recordings generated using artificial intelligence — are being used to scam workers out of millions of dollars, victimize teenagers by using phony pictures and even trick Katy Perry’s mother into believing that the singer attended the 2024 Met Gala. A group of interdisciplinary researchers, including Subbarao Kambhampati , considers the future political and social ramifications of these developments.
No one left behind: AI-enabled support for aging vets
The effects of social isolation are damaging and can have severe consequences for quality of health. While many aging Americans are at risk of feeling or being socially isolated, veterans are particularly vulnerable. Led by Ming Zhao , a cross-disciplinary team of researchers has received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create EdgeCare — an AI-powered digital assistant that will run on a small edge device in the veteran’s home.

Acclaimed mathematician awarded provisional AI patent
Dimitri Bertsekas has been awarded a provisional patent for the development of new algorithms that improve the predictive features of tools like ChatGPT. The goal is to generate the most accurate, helpful results for the user. The new patent builds on the famed mathematician’s prior research in reinforcement learning.?
Researchers use AI to test new materials so we don’t have to
Yanjie Fu is using the power of AI to help create new inorganic materials that have the potential to make airplanes safer, food storage better and military technology more affordable. He has received a grant from the National Academy of Engineering and is working with researchers at Dow to develop a deep machine learning system to test material models.
Newton for the next era
Kookjin Lee has been awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award to fund his work to create an AI machine learning system that will help discover new scientific laws. Lee’s algorithms will combine a level of awareness of key facts about the natural sciences, especially physics, chemistry and biology, with huge datasets.
