A Special Compilation

Some background

Here at Habla, we love software. Such is the case that the moment we got comfortable writing q code, we started making small, informal competitions about who could (code) golf better. We started off with the classics: the Fibonacci sequence, some Advent of Code questions we found interesting or the APL coding competition problems. It got heated quickly and we decided to share this experience with the growing KDB+/q community. Enter the Weekly Quest, where we presented a relatively simple programming challenge and announced the winners on several categories the next week.

We feel like we have grown our own small community of problem solvers, and we wanted to celebrate it with a special post dedicated to all of them and, well, here we are. Our goal today won't be to present you with a challenge, but rather to shouting out all of the people who has made this possible.

There will be several awards but we won't spoil them. Keep reading to find out!

Pro Racer ??

This category shouts out the participant with the wins in the "Fastest solution" category.

?? This award goes to Alexander Unterrainer , who has won in two ocasions!

?? In second place we have an 8-way tie! In alphabetical order, Christian Aberturas , David, KL Hui , Jack McDonough , Jesús López-González , Jonathan Leo , Krishan Subherwal , Mark Street and Sujoy R. all managed to get a single win! Congratulations!

Best golfer ?

This category awards the person with the most wins in the "Shortest solution" category.

This award goes to Mark Street from Tradefeedr with 3 wins with an average of 35.5 characters in his solutions.

In second place once again we have a tie on two wins between:

Quickest gun in the quest ??

This award showcases the quickest valid answer we received. Not in terms of performance but as in "time to a valid answer since the Quest was published". Since the "First valid answer" is a recent addition, we figured this was a more fair approach.

And the award goes to... Mark Street from Tradefeedr ! He managed to solve Quest #10 in just 10 minutes!

The Special K ??

The person who used k the most to solve Quests (even though it's not allowed) has been Attila Vrabecz from Marshall Wace ! This was an all-round tie, so the winner had to be decided on countback by counting not only the valid answers, but all comments that used either pure k or k embedded it in q! Talk about a real golfer!

Some cool stats

  • We had more than 20 unique participants throughout these Quests.
  • A total of around 45 unique answers.
  • The average solution's length in characters was 37.27 characters.
  • The most popular Quest in terms of general comments was Quest #10 with 27 of them.
  • The quest with the most valid submitted solution was Quest #7 with 9 unique valid entries.

A general shoutout

We also want to shout out everyone who got involved with these challenges in any way, shape or form:

Alexander Unterrainer , álvaro Sánchez-Paniagua Ríos , Alvi K. from Balyasny Asset Management L.P. , András D?tsch from KX , Attila Vrabecz from Marshall Wace , Christian Aberturas from Habla Computing , Conor McCarthy from KX , David, KL Hui from 摩根大通 , Jesús López-González from Habla Computing , Jonathan Leo , Krishan Subherwal , Mark Street from Tradefeedr , Matthew McCann from MUFG , Navoneel Bera , Oscar N. from Habla Computing , Rory Kemp , Sujoy R. , and Walter Pallestrong from 美国银行 .

Thank you!

We hope you had fun reading this small celebration we held. You are the ones that made this possible, so keep at it so that we can hold another celebration when the time comes. For now, we'll be coming back to you next week with a new set of Quest and Cue, so stay tuned!

Happy qoding!
