Is Speaking Your Business or Are You Using Speaking to BUILD a Business?

It's a difficult and often confusing question. Are you speaking on stages to collect a paycheck? Or are you building and scaling a business...and using speaking as your vehicle to get there?

Your answer is neither right or wrong. You choice is made based on past experience or because you were never introduced to the other...or maybe because it was something someone told you, "That's the only acceptable way to do it."

Personally, I learned to build my businesses (through the school of hard knocks) with speaking first, as described in my #1 Amazon Best Seller, Lions Always Win: How to Spot What You Want in Your Professional Speaking Business and Life...and Get it Too (with Foreword by Lois Creamer).

I was introduced to paid speaking later and had to learn from different people to gain the skills of speaking to both kinds of audiences and working with much different decision makers and contract processes.

To be very brutally honest with you, there was a point just a couple of years ago when I forgot about the "business" part. All I cared about was the speaking and hoping my business would grow naturally as a result.

Only recently did I come into contact with a person that shocked me back to my senses about the business growth side of things.

His name is Dan Kuschell .

I've been working with Dan for some months now helping him broaden his reach of speaking opportunities. Dan is an 8-figurer earner. He's started and built 13 companies over the past 30 years and has helped over 250,000 clients in over 180 niche industries in 13 countries.

What's Dan Done for Me...and My Business?

In the process of working with Dan, I've become rejuvenated to have more of a business growth and scaling mindset with the following main drivers:

  1. Your business can become much larger and far more profitable than you can visualize now. But, you have to invest some time in yourself by stepping away from your business to see the possibilities.
  2. If you choose to stay in the day-to-day activities forever, there's just never going to be enough time in the day for you to visualize something greater.

Truth is, you can absolutely speak to corporate and associations and collect a paycheck while you're also speaking to build a business.

But, if you choose the route of building a business through speaking, you really need to focus differently on building "the business" part and learning from top earners like Dan.

How I Learned from Dan

Before Christmas, you may have heard me talk about Dan. He was beginning a series of masterclasses at the time and I attended (and helped to promote) his first one. Already, I have started to make some changes as to how I'm approaching the scaling of Speakers Speak LIVE so that thousands more speakers can receive its benefits over the coming year.

But, it took me hanging around Dan to finally begin to visualize where Speakers Speak LIVE could really go. And, I'm so very excited for that future!

If you're happy doing what you're doing, I feel there's really no need to do something different. So, if you've already reached the phase of contentment in your business or speaking, your time will be better spent enjoying what you've built.

  • Provide a service (coaching, consulting) to your audience after you speak to them on-stage.
  • Sell products (books, courses, apps) to support your speaking business.
  • Have reached a sales plateau and wonder why your income is not increasing even though you're working more hours every week.
  • Despise the process of finding good people to work with you who are wanting to work.
  • Haven't taken a vacation in more than a year.
  • Worry the economy or other factors will limit your company's growth potential and there's just no hope for the future.
  • Want something bigger for your business than just a paycheck.
