This Speaking Tip Is Guaranteed To WOW Your Audiences

How many times have you sat through someone’s presentation, whether it was a person on your team, the CEO of your company, a lecture you attended outside of work---and you couldn’t wait to leave? We’ve all experienced it, that dry, draining, dreaded boredom of a perhaps well-crafted but merely heady talk.

Well, if you do any kind of speaking, any kind at all, there is one speaking tip that can do wonders to turn your content into a deeply meaningful event for your audience....

And that’s the generous use of the word YOU.

What many speakers fail to do is tie their content to the people listening. They provide great theory. Good tactics. Fine historical data. But it’s not related directly to the people who are listening so it becomes a big yawner (or bite their cheeks time so they don’t appear to be yawning, but they really are).

So next time you are going to be speaking, look at your content in terms of the benefits for your audience. Yes, benefits.

* How can they use what you are sharing in their work and/or personal lives?
* How can they relate to your content by recalling events or emotional experiences in their lives that apply?
* How can they respond to what you are talking about with a laugh of recognition, a chuckle of embarrassment that what you are saying is true, so very true for them?
* And if it’s your team that’s listening, how can they give you what you need for the team to be exceptionally successful?

The key word for all of these, and many more, is YOU. Be sure to sprinkle your talk with lots of  “you.” For example:

* “When you get home tonight, be sure you take a look at how you have organized your plan for the next day’s work.”
* “Remember when you were much younger, perhaps in grade school, and you felt out of place but you knew you had some kind of gift that you needed to express---but couldn’t?”
* “After all, you are here today. And while you probably would rather be out playing hooky, we’re all in this together, aren’t we?”
* “I”m more than proud to have you all on my team, and as you know we are being directed to face into the largest challenge ever. So how can you provide exceptional results? How can you help lead this team to victory? Here’s how. By being the smartest, boldest you you can be. And if I don’t recognize you doing that, come smack me on the back and get my attention. Because I want to be sure to reward every one of you for the gifts you are about to make to this challenge!”

In those 4 examples, I used “you” 20 times. Yes. 20! But I’ll bet you didn’t feel I overused it. Why? Because we all love the word “you.” We all want to be addressed and identified as important. That’s why the use of YOU when you are speaking is so powerful!

What’s your experience with using “you” when you speak or when you listen to someone speaking? I’m looking forward to your Comment.

Judith Sherven, PhD and her husband Jim Sniechowski, PhD https://JudithandJim.com have developed a penetrating perspective on people’s resistance to success, which they call The Fear of Being Fabuloustm. Recognizing the power of unconscious programming to always outweigh conscious desires, they assert that no one is ever failing—they are always succeeding. The question is, at what? To learn about how this played out in the life of Whitney Houston for example, and how it may be playing out in your own life, check out their 6th book: https://WhatReally KilledWhitneyHouston.com

Currently consultants on retainer to LinkedIn providing transformational executive coaching, leadership training and consulting as well as working with other corporate and private clients around the world, they continually prove that when unconscious beliefs are brought to the surface, the barriers to greater success and leadership presence begin to fade away. Judith, you nailed it! I absolutely agree. The best speakers are those that have the ability to tailor their presentations to engage each audience and answer the unspoken questions including: "How does this impact me", "Why am I here", or perhaps "What's in it for me". Well said!
