Talking points shouldn't be limited to the high-level engagement of presentations and could be about anything. It could be how you present and share your skills, plans, creative ventures, and ambitions. The point is when/if you get the opportunity to seek support, you should be able to pitch perfectly. You would leave a lasting impression if you are concise and avoid rumbling.?
The more prepared you are for every professional meeting, the more effective you will be. Networking and socializing events can be a great way to meet potential clients, employers, investors, etc. If you are ready, you can hit all your targets and deliver your selling points.?
So here are a few steps you could take to hone your talking points;?
- Understand what sells about your work, vision, plans, etc: The old marketing trick is to tell people what they want to hear with your ideas/interests woven in. A win-win situation is the best strategy to frame what sells to that specific person or audience.?
- Limit the points to five: Prioritize to have more time for a natural and creative chat. Going off the script is necessary.?
- Include keywords or important terminologies (carefully): Simplify the language & know your audience. Wove key industry terms here and there.?
- Talking points are not speeches: They are punchlines of the conversation. You should practice including them in formal and informal chats and integrate them into stories and jokes.?
- Examples and stories are key: Think of examples and stories that support each talking point and make them part of your delivery. Draw them from your experience if possible. If you are mentioning other people's stories and experiences, make sure to give credit.?
- Include a call to action (if necessary/practical): When talking to, for example, potential investors, the call for action is a delicate space. You do not want to appear desperate, naive, demanding, or entitled. Be aware of any actions that might lead to that perception.?
- Practice: Try it on your friends and family - if possible, don't tell them you are practicing so that you get their honest reaction.?
