Speaking publically opens doors, changes lives, shifts an atmosphere and allows individuals to share their talents, gifts and skills with the World if done correctly. Speaking with Power and Passion can truly be the Game Changer for your Business!
Speaking Publically is something I have enjoyed and have had the awesome opportunity in doing throughout my entire career. I started out speaking about powerful Technology Topics, and then it transitioned to both Professional Development and Leadership topics. My career began over 37 years ago with a few powerful Consulting firms whose clients included the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Department of Navy as well as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. While my roles in those firms included Project Management, Software Development, and Learning and Development, Speaking was always a part of my toolkit.
I have also spoken to new and seasoned business leaders about topics geared around growing their businesses, building their pipelines, networking with power and of course, using LinkedIn to build long term and powerful business relationships. But some of my greatest topics delivered in the past include Gaining Your Seat At The Table, Keeping Your Seat and/or using Project Management Skills to Enhance Your Voice At The Table.
But as we begin to move to the end of a challenging pandemic and many other world challenges, I still find myself speaking often about the following:
Preparing for a Powerful Presentation
One of the greatest things that must occur first in your preparation process, is to first
identify what type of speech or briefing you plan to deliver? While there are many different
types of speeches, we will focus on the most common 3 in this article.
Informative – This speech serves to provide interesting and useful information to your audience.?Some examples of informative speeches:
o???A facilitator teaching about Emotional Intelligence
o???A student talking about her research
o???A travelogue about the Tower of London
o???A computer programmer speaking about new software

Demonstrative Speeches – This has many similarities with an informative speech. A demonstrative speech also teaches you something. The main difference lies in including a demonstration of how to do the thing you’re teaching.?Some examples of demonstrative speeches:
o???How to start your own blog
o???How to develop an effective communications plan
o???How to create a long term training plan
o???How to write your first book

Persuasive – A persuasive speech works to convince people to change in some specific way. It may focus on the way they think or the way they do something.?Some examples of persuasive speeches include:
o???Return to the workplace with a spirit of excellence
o???Improve your health through better eating
o???Rent our phenomenal mansions for your next big event
o???Become a volunteer and change the world

Select a Powerful Topic / Develop a Great Outline / Research, Research, Research
Once your speech type has been selected, select a powerful and passionate topic that is near and dear to you, if possible. Develop a draft outline as soon as you can. The outline will help guide you through your research as well as the development of your powerful speech. Once the outline has been completed, kick off the research process. The most important tip we want to share around the concept of Research is, you must use proven and professional sources for your research! A few examples of great proven sources include the following:
o???Use reputable websites, digital and print sources – No “Wikipedia” sites
o???Consider journals, publications and associations to gather key data on your topic
o???Brainstorm and talk to people who are knowledgeable about the topic
o???Search government sites for reliable statistics and information?

Write a Powerful Speech
Introduction – The early moments of a speech are crucial. At that time, you are establishing your credibility and likeability.? You can also open with a question, an appropriate and brief story or personal anecdote if it works for the speech. This is also where you’ll outline your main points. ??
Body – Get to the issues you are there to address and limit them to five points at most.? Then bolster those few points with illustrations, evidence and anecdotes.?Be passionate.??Your conviction can be as persuasive as the appeal of your ideas.
?Conclusion – Wrap up with feeling as well as fact. Try your best to end the speech with ?something upbeat that will inspire your listeners. You can also close with a call to action, an assignment, and/or a powerful poem if appropriate.
Five Mindsets For Better Pubic Speaking
According to Mr. Scott Shickler, in his article entitled, “Five Mindsets for Better Public Speaking” the following items were identified as key to any successful speech:
o???Share your passions
o???Be Authentic
o???Understand your audience
o???Prepare to adjust
o???The Giving Factor
?In addition, as a Public Speaker for any Corporation or Agency, it is crucial that you come off as Powerful, Prepared and Passionate at all times.?Many studies show that we truly only have a few moments to dazzle our audience, so as a result, we must come out the gate confident the moment we stand to our feet or open our mouths!
?Core Characteristics of a Strong Presenter
?Powerful Presenters: These individuals are always focused on delivering at a higher level. They are constantly reviewing and researching new material, new ideas, as well as always looking for new ways to engage their audience on a regular basis.
Prepared Presenters: These individuals recognize that preparation will position them for promotion. They understand that they must take the time to outline, write, edit, review and practice multiple times until they believe perfection has occurred.
Passionate Presenters: These individuals recognize that great topics are crucial if they are going to be successful. They try to present only those topics that they are passionate about at the particular time of presenting.
Happy Presenting!
