Speaking Potential: The Unseen Influence of a Teacher's Words

In my high school years, I was far from what anyone would call a gentleman or a scholar. Engrossed in youthful rebellion, I found myself often rude, inconsiderate, and a reluctant reader at best. My homeroom and English teacher saw something different, though. Every day, she would affirm me as "a gentleman and a scholar," a statement I dismissed as utterly disconnected from the person I was.
Her words felt misplaced, even foolish to my defiant ears. Yet, those very labels she bestowed upon me played a subtle, powerful role in shaping the person I would become. She wasn't just assigning titles; she was speaking life into traits that lay dormant within me, waiting to be awakened.
Only now do I grasp the profound wisdom in her approach. She understood something essential—that the words we speak can either nurture or negate the seeds of potential in those around us.
Today's Wisdom Wednesday Insight:
Our words carry immense power—the power to uplift and transform, or the power to diminish and discourage. Let us choose to see beyond the surface, to speak to the unseen qualities that, with nurturing, can flourish. Today, take a moment to reflect on how you use your words. Do they acknowledge and encourage the potential in others, even if it's not immediately visible? Or do they cater to the limitations that lie before us?
As we interact with colleagues, friends, or even strangers, let's harness the power of our speech to support, inspire, and kindle the flames of growth. It's an opportunity not just to communicate but to contribute to someone's journey of becoming.
