Speakers in the News: 4.29 - 5.3
Leigh Bureau speakers are always working on incredible things. Every Friday, we bring you a weekly roundup of the most impactful writings, releases, and appearances from our speakers.
This week we bring you two new books on the state of American politics, commentary from differing perspectives on the protests happening across college campuses, a new documentary on reframing national debt, and more!
Out this week is the highly anticipated The Age of Grievance by bestselling author and NYT columnist Frank Bruni . The book defines an era in American politics where the blame game is the most popular sport and victimhood is the most fashionable garb. Bruni assesses the erosion of civility, common ground, and compromise once present in healthy American democracy and provides insight into how we got here and how we move beyond outrage.
Listen: Apocalyptic Partisanship
Also out this week is Rebellion: How Antiliberalism Is Tearing America Apart—Again by historian Robert Kagan. Combining historical and contemporary political analysis, he shines a light on the unique threats to democracy posed by Trump and the GOP. He foresees an outcome of the 2024 election where a Trump loss leads to the secession of Republican-dominated states, leaving the United States united no more.
The protests on college campuses across the United States have dominated headlines this week. From professors at the involved institutions to outside observers, many of our speakers shared their opinions on the events that unfolded.

While many survivors and victims of sexual assault and rape may feel abandoned by the Court, we all can play a role in assuring them that they are not alone.
Last week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the rape convictions against former film producer Harvey Weinstein, much to the despair of survivors everywhere. Anita Hill, known for her allegations against then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, has dedicated her career to ending workplace sexual harassment and gender-based violence of all kinds. She is president of the Hollywood Commission which works to tackle the culture of abuse and power disparity in the entertainment industry. She published an op-ed lamenting the reversal but offering assurance that this setback is not the end of the fight.
Finding the Money follows economist and academic Stephanie Kelton on her journey to reframe the national debt debate. By introducing the public to an economic concept called Modern Monetary Theory, or MMT, Kelton shares how democracies around the world can fight the biggest challenges of the 21st century. The documentary won awards as it toured the festival circuit last year and is now in theatres and available to stream.
