Trying to conflate all of these attacks together does no good because, in effect, what these right-wing activists are doing [is] trying to bait people in the academy into defending double standards, into appearing like hypocrites. And I think no one should take that bait. The only question should be whether or not this was actual misconduct.

There is much discussion surrounding the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay. Were her past instances of plagiarism enough to warrant her removal? Was she uniquely targeted because of her race, gender, and politics? Tom Nichols joined PBS NewsHour to share his insights on the matter.

Others are far less concerned, arguing this alarm has been sounded for decades and the always-impending disaster has yet to come to pass. Economist Stephanie Kelton joined NPR to share her insights on reframing our understanding of the national debt.

What matters is not whether, or even how quickly, we slip but what happens afterward.

To close out this New Year's edition of Speakers in the News, we'd like to revisit a piece from bestselling author Eric Weiner on rethinking New Year's resolutions, which have gotten a bad rap in recent years, as few new habits last beyond January. But Weiner makes the case that by accepting failure and redefining success, we can learn valuable lessons from our resolutions, even if we don't stick to them 100% of the time.
