With 2.6 million cooperative societies, over 1 billion members, and a combined turnover of 3 trillion US-$ (Grace, 2014), the global cooperative movement is the largest organisation in the world. It has more members than the trade union movement, is more powerful economically than several G20 nations, and employs many more people than all multinational companies put together. In theory, a powerful movement like this should be at the centre of international development. Even though the movement is big and strong, it has not had much of an effect.

When looking at The Role of Cooperatives in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, it might be helpful to think about the following four things:

1. The current list of 17 goals and 169 associated targets seems to favour the environmental aspect of sustainability. Within the goals and targets that have an economic component, access to finance seems to overshadow other aspects, such as access to markets. Also, some goals and targets cover a lot of different things under a single topic. Lastly, the rights-based approach to development doesn't seem to be reflected enough in the current set of goals and targets.

2. The new Sustainable Development Goals will have three parts: economic, social, and environmental. But these three things are not neatly separated. Instead, they are connected, often working together, and sometimes going against each other. Health (goal 3) is an example of a "social" goal, but providing health care is an important part of the economy and a big job creator. Economic growth, which is seen as important for reducing poverty and many other SDGs, may hurt the environment. And getting energy to everyone (goal 7) is important from an economic, social, and environmental point of view. In other words, the economic part of the SDGs can't and shouldn't be looked at by itself.

3. By their very nature, cooperatives play three important roles: as economic actors, they create jobs, ways to make a living, and income; as social organisations with a common goal and bond, they provide protection and security and work toward equality and social justice; and as democratically controlled associations of individuals, they play a positive role in communities, nations, society, and politics.

These three roles can't be separated from each other because they are part of what makes cooperatives what they are.

4. In many ways, cooperatives are just the tip of an iceberg made up of the less visible but more widespread social and solidarity economy (SSE). The SSE is made up of many different organisations, associations, and institutions that, even though they don't have a single definition, follow universal principles like those listed above. Not all SSE organisations are cooperatives, but they all provide a place for people to work together, help each other, be solidary, and be fair. Clearly, the SSE has a lot to offer when it comes to achieving the SDGs and their goals.

In Kiribati, the number of cooperatives has grown by 94 percent in the last 40 years, which has helped the industry grow. Communities can use cooperatives to take advantage of opportunities in the productivity sectors. They are also a big part of making progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The government of Kiribati is committed to strengthening and reviving cooperatives as key business players in the economy to increase economic activity, create jobs, help deliver (basic) services, and make money for communities, including women and young people in the outer islands. People and groups have always worked together toward a common goal in cooperatives. They use skills and knowledge that complement each other to finish big projects and build economic powerhouses in many fields.

Through the Kiribati Trade Policy Framework 2017-2027, the government of Kiribati encourages cooperatives in many different areas. It has been found that the cooperative subsector is a key factor in the growth of both inclusive trade and the private sector. The government is trying to get rid of corruption in the country by making the legal and regulatory systems and institutions stronger.

In a marketplace defined by complexity, disruption and change, today’s most successful enterprises are those that bring diverse perspectives and experiences to each new challenge. Along with being the right thing to do, diversity and inclusion offer a strategic advantage – especially at the leadership level.

That is why it is critically important for businesses to look at the challenges women often face, and clear the path for talented and dynamic leaders to rise to the top.

This understanding – together with our own commitment to fostering a culture at GCPIT & CIMSME that is both diverse and inclusive – inspired us to commission this study on women and leadership. At GCPIT & CIMSME, we have long believed that creating and promotion of a work environment where women can thrive, and implementing initiatives that support, advance, retain and reward them, is not only the right thing to do, it is a smart and strategic business approach.

The Women’s Leadership Study is a comprehensive survey of more than 500 professionals and entrepreneurs, exploring the qualities and experiences that contribute to women’s leadership and advancement in the workplace.

The Global Sustainable Business Summit, Womenomics & Women in Trade and follow-on programming have one objective: to move more women into the C-suite. The event will bring together today’s most accomplished leaders from the worlds of business, politics, sports and the media, to inspire the next generation of women leaders.

It is our fervent belief that the outcome of this study will inform and encourage leaders to take clear and decisive steps to develop the leadership potential of their female employees—and that we will all be stronger for it.

The Global Women in Leadership Summit and Awards?is the most important and wide-reaching event on the planet. It brings together global leaders, big businesses, and forward-thinking pioneers to inspire, drive action, and speed up innovation, partnership, impact, and sustainability to solve humanity’s biggest problems.

One of the world’s fastest-growing councils,?we bring together 900 CEOs, world leaders, policy makers, innovators, and youth and community leaders from all over the world.?These people come from all over the world and are strategically placed across geography. Finance, tech, energy, health, retail, travel, manufacturing, telecommunications, food, and mobility are all represented.

Global Council for the Promotion of International Trade, The Great Leaders Council, Global Founders and Global Alliances will jointly present Global Women in Leadership Summit and Awards 2023 on 4th March’2023 at Copthorne Hotel Dubai.

UN Women announces the theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March 2022 (IWD 2022) as, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.?
